I trust some of you will have joined me in reading Steven Wells' review in WH Smith's yesterday. When I was younger he used to put the fear of God into me but I'm a (bit) less in awe of people like him now. VIntage stuff though - for those who haven't seen it, he somehow contrives to blame the popularity of Belle & Sebastian's rotten, gutless namby-pamby ways on Tony Blair's election victory. Now I'm all for associating New Labour with many undesirable social trends, perhaps including the success of certain bands, but I just don't see how B&S fit into it. Or perhaps I am part of the enemy and can't see the wood for the trees. Anyway, Belle & Sebastian - too stupid for art school but clever enough to get into music college. Makes a catchy slogan, don't you think? The MM review was really very fair, on the other hand. Funny that the good (well, kind anyway) should go to Saturday's shambles while the Sunday matinee should get such a slating.
