Sinister: The mailing list formerly known as being about B&S
We seem to be divided into two categories here (or three if you count the people who just don't give a toss and are probably getting bored of all this!); 1. The 'hard-core' indie fan. Listens to John Peel. Thinks variety means hearing as many different bands as possible, preferably ones no-one has heard of. Thinks credibility is gained by having seen "Tonto's Exploding Penis" playing down the Frog & Sprocket on a Monday night in January. 2. The 'mainstream' indie fan. Listens to Mark Radcliffe. Thinks variety means having Carter USM, Ben Folds Five, Divine Comedy, Space, Radiohead and Abba in the same CD collection (all examples from my own as it happens). Doesn't care about credibility. Now obviously it's not for me to say which is right, everyone's welcome to their own taste. But every person on this list has one thing in common, a love of B&S, so let's not turn this into a slanging match between 'real music fans' and the rest, OK? Stuart G Oh, and Duke, I would rather listen to ANY guitar band than the Spice Girls... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I'd have to fall into the third catagory. Not only does this thread exclude subscribers from outside the UK (of which there are a few, I assure you), but it's also tangential at best. Talk about B&S is ideal. Talk about other bands or music is ok. Talk about the dj's who play whatever kind of music is, perhaps, a bit too far off the mark, IMO. -take care alex ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Those outside the UK who want to listen to a sad old git playing techno rubbish should get hold of a short wave radio, stick your ariel out of the kitchen window and tune into the BBC World Service at 0830 GMT on Fridays. I do it every week. When I remember, that is. Maybe it is going a bit too far to talk to talk about DJs, but as a UK citizen living abroad I was genuinely curious as to whether or not the aforementioned sad old git had played B&S or not. Strange but true. Those nonplussed by the conversation can easily delete the messages without reading them, provided they have a clear subject line. For the record, it's the first time I've felt slightly...erm..."annoyed" by any postings to this list. I really am quite fond of John Peel and I enjoy his tangential talk about his family and so on. And I also think he genuinely likes the music he plays, techno rubbish or not. So hip hip hooray for John Peel. With subscribers from all over the world ( France, Spain, USA, Brazil, anymore?) some messages are bound to exclude some readers. I don't think this should be a problem if we all just bear in mind that different people have different needs and so on and so on into the philosophical night... There, that was a rare outbreak of maturity from me. Must go and have a lie down. All the best, Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . which means, presumably that you care a whole lot about your credibility, because admiting to liking the Spice Girls in the sad indie-dom means you 'are not indie' (cue hilarious sneer...) ;-) the duke. -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
