Sinister: Where is Dunfermline and the Dalai Lama speaks
Hullo sinisterines, I went through the archives ( a useful thing to do, occasionally) to see how Honey would put this. There have been a lot of posts recently - which is good! However, there are some very nice guidelines and stuff in the faq about posts to sinister. I quote from a mail which Honey sent some time ago, when there were only 500 people on the list, and I think they are worth bearing in mind. Please, I am not getting at anyone in particular, but observing these makes the list a better place. Trust me. First, please think when you are sending a mail that 1400 people will be reading it, and it is worth putting some time and effort into it. Even if it a short one:) Honey said "The drill is: compose your message... hover your finger over the send key for 10 seconds...think whether we all want to hear and whether Cliff Richard (or the Dalai Lama) would approve... send." After a few moments pondering, you might think that 1400 people and the archive (there forever..) may not really need to hear that you agree with a previous post, or that if you do, you can at least expand and improve the debate... Secondly, please don't use the list for private mail or mail to about 5 people. Some specific content in a general message is fine but please don't rattle on for ages. And if you are advertising something (which is generally discouraged but if it is about list-members or of specific B&S interest then) please try to mention it in an otherwise witty and touching post, rather than just mail it out Don't quote gallons of text and add a line. If you're quoting more than you're saying don't bother. When we are all so excited about the concerts and new songs (even though I think Jonathan David is rubbish, but then I have only heard it once and I can't make any sense of it, it is a mad song, and not in a good way), I am very loathe to be a wet blanket and am not saying that anyone is bad; everyone is very welcome in sinister and everyone is lovely, and sometimes it takes a lot of guts to write a post. I was trembling when I did my first one (maybe I should tremble more, now) but that the more care people take, the better the list is for everyone. Good posts inspire others - they are funny, or informative, or touching, or are about sinisterines the world over. We should have drawings of us in National Costume. I had a book with National Costume once, and the English National Costume was a policeman's uniform...Peter Millar wears this to all the fiestas he need to go to. Finito Not long to go now, is it? I have just realised that we (me and Honey) are going to five B&S gigs, which I hope is not some sort of a record for paying customers. There must be someone going to more... However, there is the social element of seeing new and lovely people, and guess what! if you can't get out of your own country for legal or religious reasons, you can watch us on the web. I was thrilled to discover that Dunoon has its own webcam, http://www.dunoon.org/ which unfortunately was not operational when I tried this evening, but I am sure Dunoon councillors will get their fat municipal arses in gear to get it working by Saturday. See Richard stagger down the gangplank of the Dunoon Ferry, carrying his drum kit, of course! See Stuart drink tea in The Olympian Cafe-Bar "Great either day or night"..However I am a bit worried that on the same night The Alexander Brothers will be swinging their kilts in Strachur Memorial Hall, 19:30 for 20:00. How civilised! 19:30 for 20:00! Now come on, that isn't fair. They have been much better recently... That's all.
