Man, just when I hit my lows of the evenings, the digest comes and gives me that 11:30 PM pick-me-up that gets me through till bedtime. Bedtime is looking very nice tonight, as I'm leaving for home tomorrow afternoon to spend a glorious spring break in...Rogers, Arkansas. Wow. Sigh...at least I can catch up on some much needed sleep and maybe earn a few bucks mowing the lawn for my parents (just like the old days!). Have my road music picked out as well...old Smashing Pumpkins, new Yo La Tengo, all those remastered Bowie albums (!!!), Big Star, the Cure, and yes, "Tigermilk." Don't leave for spring break without it. I love reading some of these posts, because it just reminds me of how secluded we American midwesterners really have it. It's so hard to relate to you kids, with your NME and Melody Maker and what-have-ye. I'm sure that topic--the difference between music journalism and promotion on opposite sides of the pond--is constantly worn out in lists like this, but really? I can't think of true dominating forces in the American press that could be equated to the NME/Melody Maker debate. I haven't heard any Rolling Stone/Spin debates lately, at least. Maybe because those magazines, deep down at their core, are simply pulse readers for the current pop culture--there's no loyalties or promotion of certain scenes/styles of music at those magazines. They *might* have had a little sway even six years ago, but I doubt it, and either way, it doesn't matter these days. As ridiculous as you all make NME and MM out to be, it nevertheless seems that those mags at least their heads dipped a bit further into the pool of music than anyone around here. I dunno, though, since I avoid all of that sort of stuff as much as possible (and here I am, a magazine journalism student...kill me). Apparently the music stores around Columbia are selling the LLPJ boxset like hotcakes. I knew that there were many B&S fans in the community, but I've been amazed at just how quickly the five or six stores around here are going through the boxes...order, sell, reorder, sell, ad infinitum. We haven't recieved a copy at the radio station, but I'm sure we have the EPs shoved into the stacks somewhere already. No rumblings yet from anyone about the new single or LP. You'd have thought that the Pony Express would have brought the info to these settlers by now, but mid-Missouri is still pretty secluded. ;) Tackled Hesse's "Demian" a couple nights ago. The man never ceases to amaze me, and I find that his books simply get better and better with each re-read. Had one of my "screw my country" fits last night and read some choice excerpts from "The People's History of the United States," and now I'm on to my 500th time through "Rise to Globalism." Ah, my country tis of thee and all that BS...blah.
