Northern Soul as in Mod revivalists spinning on their head
Are you sure they were mod revivalists? there was me thinking they were soul boys:-) They may have (partly) grown out of the mod scene but the soul boys were in no sense mod revivalists (in my view).
Some singles are equally as good as the all time Motown greats but relatively unknown.
The best northen is better than the best Motown, having the kind of intensity that the saccharine Motown 'all-time greats' (with a very small number of honourable exceptions) never got near.
buying Northern Soul records, like most other genres, involves wading through loads of crap. There are loads of vinyl or CD compilations on loads of labels, the best being the likes of Kent or Goldmine/Soul Supply.
There's never been a better time (at least since the heydays of the early seventies) for buying good quality northern soul records. The quality of the Kent compilations is pretty consistent and most Kent stuff is worth a dice buy. Beware Goldmine/Soul Supply though. While some of their stuff is fine, there ais way too much weak material and there seem to be too many rehashes of obvious old track listings. Also, they seem to have less luck in locating good quality master tapes than Kent, so the sound sometimes suffers. My advice is always to listen before you buy... And talking of buying, i you do fancy Goldmine discs, Polar Bear records in Leeds used to have a seemingly endless supply of their CDs at very reasonable prices.
aving only around 20 or so Northern Soul comp LPs/CDs means I'm only small fan, and I prefer Sixties Soul. I'd recommend you look out or anything by Mary Love, Jackie Day or Vernon Garrett. he earlier Kent compilations ("For Dancers Only" and the like) are a good bet and there are good budget CDs about. Look out for a CD called 18 Northern Soul Floorshakers' which you might even be able to pick up in those nasty 2.99 racks in your local Newsagent/petrol station!
That's excellent advice. And the bit that follows is better:
avoid anything which says 'some tracks may be re-recorded etc.'
ah, sage words.
For my part, my favourite soul section is the deep stuff, slower and more emotional, just beautiful. Buy 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures' (Kent), kill for a copy of the Betty Lavette Lp on Charly, and go from there. That's my tip.
Sorry about the lack of B&S.

Mine too. Despite its ridiculous title, this is a really good album. It is subtitled "Taken From the Vaults...Volume 1". There is a picture of Dave Godin in the back of the booklet. He looks like an Open University lecturer.
Sorry about the lack of B&S.
