He most certainly did exist. I won a Captain Zep sticker for correctly solving that particular week's riddle circa 1982. He had gelled back hair and a Blake's Seven air to his proverbial 'proceedings'. I also won a Blue Peter badge when I was nine, but that's probably far too B&S to be true.
