AHALTER asks about sad songs we cannot bear to listen to: The saddest thing that I can think of is the film PONETTE. I began crying mid-way through the film, and was all but hyperventalating (SP?) by the time it ended. The friends I was with were embarassed by my pitiful weeping. I think I will rent the video someday when I am alone and feeling quite pathetic. Songs? At the moment, all that come to mind are things like "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," the melodies of which draw forth painful early high school memories, crushes on boys and the like... I know there are more, but I can't think of any. It's unbearable to remember being sad in high school, really. I think I've effectively blocked most of those years out. -Kristen ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . The saddest movie I have ever seen (and one of the absolute best) is Leaving Las Vegas. No movie has touched more deeply. I loved it so much. and I bought it, cause it was really cheap at this store once. I've never been able to watch it. I never have felt like I could handle it again. yet, I still like that it sits there in my collection, to remind me of what a powerful force emotion is and what great art is capable of... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Yes, but what about it's appearance in Ferris Buellers Day Off, while in the art gallery Cameron is staring at a painting of a boy..it's very poignant moment, the music fits so well (it's an instrumental version by the Dream Academy btw). That film is brilliant, it's funny and then sad and it all WORKS. JJ xx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I, too, was a complete mess during "Ponette," and was not helped by the fact that my companions thought it was a silly movie. Give me a ring when you decide to relive the pain. One of my favorite films, also terribly upsetting, is "Farewell My Concubine." As for songs personally sad: Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You." About three years have passed since this became unbearable to listen to, and I still skip over it on the CD player (then again, it's the only song I really like on the album). And though it is not connected to any specific memories, "Fox In The Snow" also makes me cry. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Just as i was contemplating whether to join the "saddest song" lament, remaniac came up with:

you're just so right! i can't listen to that song without crying - not only because it's so lovely but because i fell in love to that song. i know that's incredibly corny. but he was my first real love. the first night i stayed over his house, he put that song on first thing in the morning. and it was a glorious morning. sunny and warm. then he made me muffins and tea. you know when you're in love for the first time and you're just so absolutely overwhelmed with the enormity of the feeling. you can't imagine what it was like when you weren't in love. well this song sums up that time for me. needless to say, we were together for two years then had a very sad break up. so fade into you just tears me apart. except now i can't listen to flowers in december by mazzy star which my former love played during the weeks of our demise. boo hoo. love to all jane ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
