Sinister: B&S new album and E.P.
I went home for the weekend, and typically, instead of doing all the things I could only do at home while I had the chance, I watched TV instead. Now, (this does become more relevant so bear with me) at home we have the luxury of Teletext. Whilst bridging that long, lonely void between lunch and tea, I was looking at the music pages on channel 4 and, bizzarely, they had a piece about the new B&S album. So, here's what I can remember of it... The recording of the album is nearly completed. Stuart David said "It'll be done by the end of February. Some song titles are Marx and Engels, I Fought In A War, Once Upon A Weekend, Wake Her Up, Landslide and Winter Woofkie." The album is due in late summer and the preceeding E.P. is likely to comprise Lonliness Of The Middle-Distance Runner, Paper Boat, and Lord Anthony. Woo! Can David and Katrina confirm any of this? The best news in my opinion is the inclusion of the lonliness of the mid-dist runner on the e.p. (and they did call it an e.p., even though it only has 3 tracks). Yeah, the bloke who does the music page is a a big b&s fan, i spoke to him on aol a few months ago. He abuses his position as impartial reviewer to mention them as much as possible, which is cool. Also, i've just got back from america and i have to say US radio and telly are absolute arse. I'm amazed that any of the american listees have even heard of any good bands let alone the wonders of the belles. Every time i switched to mtv it was matchbox 20 or some similar shite. The radio waves were full of golden oldies and vh1 american style is even more aor than the english one. Dont get me wrong, im not slagging off americans. quite the opposite, im praising the ones on this list. To discover good bands among the dirge clogging up the airwaves in the states deserves erm, something. Sorry, just got distracted and completely lost my flow. You get the idea anyway. Still, america's a top place, really enjoyed my stay there and hope to go back soon. On the plane on the way there i saw phil cornwell who plays michael caine and others on stella street and used to be the voice of gilbert the alien. On the plane back i saw Boris Johnson. Who? you ask. Do you remember the journalist who was on have i got news for you who got joked about for offering to beat up another journalist for darius guppy? the upper class twit one? If you do then it was him. If you dont then sorry for wasting your time. On the way to get to my seat i made sure to 'accidentally' bump him as i walked past. Just my little way of 'giving it' to 'the man' as i hate journos, especially posh ones with no grasp of reality. Still, i can add them to my list of crap celebs ive seen (tommy boyd, a bloke from londons burning, fella from the pot noodle ads, eddie temple morris) I much prefer them to real celebs. I have more fun remembering and recounting them than i do about seeing big stars like jarvis cocker or mark owen or god. Anyway, more than enough codswallop for one day. I blame jetlag. Cheers, Rich ps Whilst in the US i got an elliot smith album either called KIll Rock Stars or on the Kill Rock Stars label (or both). Can anyone tell me anything about it? np - eric satie - gymnoperdie (bringing a little culture to the smut and cardies) +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". hey, kids... in reference to the assertion that the US media is "absolute arse", i'd have to say that i mostly agree. mtv and vh1 aren't worth talking about (mtv's best programs are sunday nights, midnight to 3am because of 120 Minutes and Amp -- they show the wicked video!), and most radio stations are victims of top 40 rotation. what you didn't find, though, are the lovely little indie stations, college stations, etc. really, discovering new bands is a matter of using/abusing the internet, reading every little zine and music mag that comes along, and sharing tapes with friends. and as far as the elliot smith goes, it is probably his self-titled album on the killrockstars label (lack of an actual album title might lead one to the conclustion that kill rock stars is the title). although the label does various compilations (shifting the words in the label name about to make fun little phrases like rock stars kill, etc... try it, it's fun!) anyway, elliot smith is amazing amazing amazing.... especially this first album.... um, b&s content: sadly i am not jetting across the ocean for this wonderful festival... although i will be spending my spring break (march 20-28) in london! if anyone has advice or suggestions as to Things/Places I MUST See/Go, esp. record stores and such, let me know! it will be me and my two lovely housemates -- three wide-eyed girls spending a week in a foreign city with no real arrangements for places to stay/sleep. okay, take care, kids... xo, marie +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". ah, but he's also a bit of a prick, since he was the only person we gave a press pass to way back when B&S played colchester. and he proceeded to chat to, and grope his girlfriend throughout from the back of the hall. we were pissed that although he widely proclaimed love for the band, no-one we know would ever then treat one of their rare appearances akin to a visit to a brothel. david ----------------------------------------------------------------------- david kitchen : jeepster recordings ltd http://www.jeepster.co.uk/ mailto:shop@jeepster.co.uk jeepster recordings ltd, 217 canalot, 222 kensal road, london w10 5bn to subscribe to the news mailing list mail majordomo@jeepster.co.uk with the words 'subscribe news' in the body of the message +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". <<<np - eric satie - gymnoperdie (bringing a little culture to the smut and cardies)>>> local "classical" band called Virtual Consort which consists of an arch guitar (cross between lute and guitar), Trumpet, and electric bass guitar named their latest album after these pieces and does very cool versions of #1 and #3 also some kick arse arrangements of Stravinsky, Nino rota (from "8 1/2"), lots of other stuff dunno if anyone listens to national public radio (the best thing outside of community and college radio, not saying much) they get played a lot (one of the npr babies) and got famous on prarie home companion (ugh ich ptoo) towns under 2000 (or whatever number) contest which has the "best" artists from small towns blah anyway i think some people on here might dig Virtual Consort esp since the trumpet player is wunnerful and quiet and not what most trumpet players are and the music is muy pretty and perfect lying in the grass on windy day music -----Ev np-East River Pipe-Goodbye, California -- ----------------------------------------------------- I would feel much better If I knew you got this letter 'Cause the road that lays between us Is one week long And I don't have the bread To come and see you now ---"Letter To Bread"-- Scud Mtn.
