Sinister: French fries, French bread, French dressing...

Hey kids, Philippe writes the most beautiful letters, doesn't he? I just want to say thank you to Philippe and Mark C and everyone else who says they like Americans. I have experienced the "I hate all Americans, but I guess *you're* okay..." and it's so nice to think there *are* welcoming arms in every country. I know America has a bad rep sometimes, especially what we read of France's opinion of us. I know many people who are scared to visit France, for fear they all hate us. If there are even five boys and girls in France as nice as Philippe and the other Sinisterines, I will have to take a holiday there. Let's have a picnic, I say.
Scared to visit France ! Why ? The truth is that sometimes America seems awful to us. I can only tell my feelings, not the point of view of all the french people. I like America because of blues, jazz, rock, writers. Because I love Cormac Mc Carthy, Paul Auster, Woody Allen, Bill Evans, Jim Harrison, John Cassavetes, John Coltrane, Lambchop, etc... But there are also many things that I dont like : all the bad movies coming from Hollywood, puritanism, death penalty, trash TV, Mac Donalds, Kenneth Starr... I will come to the US next year, and I will live there at least one year. I will certainly miss Europe, and France. I love my country, but I dont sing our national anthem every morning. I am not particularly proud to be french: I'm not responsible for being french, I didn't choose. Let's try to take the best from all the countries. From Scotland, I take Belle & Sebastian ! And tonight I will watch Doctor Carter, Docter Green, Doctor Ross on TV... it's an emergency :) Philippe, the french boy +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". On a related tangent, maybe Philippe can shed some light on why there are so many French Paul Auster fans? I'm inclined to believe that there are actually more French P.A. fans than American ones. Just curious. -mrjake who likes his This Mortal Coil on vinyl with a side of hot cocoa +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". French people like artists whose work is strongly linked to New York. Because New York is the city in the US where you feel the most a kind of "european culture". And we love artists who love France! Many writers (Auster, Jay MacInerney), film directors (Auster), music composers (Philip Glass) have many fans in France. And some of these artists speak french, which is not the case for a majority of americans :) But this has nothing to do with Belle&Sebastian. So if some of you want to discuss about this kind of subjects with me, you can contact me privately. We can talk about America, France, Scotland, Germany as much as you want to! Looking forward to hearing from you, Philippe +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
