Sinister: I like my "virtual cyberfriends," thank you very much
This whole argument about list content is really, really silly, in my opinion (and probably the opinion of lots of others). I have never, ever been on a mailing list that doesn't contain some amount of fluff unrelated to the subject of the list. But that's part of the fun of it. I didn't think anyone subscribed to a mailing list and expected it to stay on topic. Yes, there is a lot of traffic on this list. It's something that I noticed after one day of subscribing. Yes, some of it is irrelevant to me. But you know what? I just delete what is irrelevant. No complaints, no bother. If I miss something, I'm sure I'll catch up eventually. What bothered me was the comment about "who needs virtual cyberfriends." I've met a lot of wonderful people over the Internet, and so have many of my friends. Does this mean that "I can't make friends with living, breathing people in the flesh"? No, it doesn't. I'm a perfectly well-adjusted human being (albeit a bit shy). I took offense at this comment. I found it insulting. Relationships formed over the Internet can be just as intense and personal as relationships formed in real life. It may sound sort of cheesy to meet people that way, but I'll find friends wherever I can. Anyone who is going to discount a friendship as being "unimportant" just because it takes place over the Internet needs to open their mind a little bit. And now for some obligatory B&S content...I have been listening to "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" all day...and I have been enjoying it immensely. I'm upset that I missed the video on 120 Minutes...I was even awake, but I never watch any more...the garbage that passes for "alternative" just makes my head hurt. But now I realize that I'm going to have to watch it...but with my luck, they'll never repeat it, and I'm out of luck....bah. xo love nanette! no idea, no spark: nanette's online journal http://www.geocities.com/soho/workshop/7432/ new entry coming soon!! +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". I find that even though I am communicating with more people than ever, this is a two-sided issue. On one hand, how else would I have active corresponce with people from Sweden, Russia, Australia, Germany, Chile, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands? On the other hand, I have met some local people face-to-face after trading email, after meeting on mailing lists. But...since we are used to email, and it is so easy to dash off a note about "Hey Mark whaddayathinka...", I know we speak on the phone less, and see each other face-to-face less often. Now, meeting fellow B&S fans: I thought the show in Chicago might be a good occasion to meet some people. The list meet-up was a total bust. I could not find anyone. The venue was crowded enough that you could really only talk to the people you landed near. First I found myself standing next to a gal who had a bit of a Catholic schoolgirl thing happening fashionwise. She was not unfriendly, but every attempt to start a conversation would only elicit a one-sentence response. I couldn't determine if she was reacting out of lack of interest, lack of much to say, or from the inhibitions of shyness. After Momus finished, I decided I didn't care. Through a Bugs Bunny-like "pardon-me-excuse-me- pardon-me-excuse-me..." I forced myself closer to the stage. I landed next to a petite blond who had more to say. She said I looked like I must be someone important. Lots of eye contact and all the things which at minimum border on flirtation. After the show I floated the idea of meeting up for a bite to eat or something (as opposed to asking outright), whereupon she waved "bye-bye" and left with her boyfriend (hadn't noticed him earlier). It's a big boxing match out there, and I am always wide open for a flurry of blows to the kidney and a right hook knockout punch. I've got the cauliflower ears to prove it too. But try to find a trainer! Ha! A big truck from a furniture rental company is blocking my afternoon sunshine. In fact, I probably would have been too shy too expose my feelings to the world as you have. Hey, what else. A tag imposter (don't worry tag, I thought it was quite um, amusing. And..... Queen Bee Janine commented briefly that: Did you know that honey is the sweetest naturally occuring substance on the planet? I thought that candarell was sweeter... ;-) kelly said: OK, I'm gonna go curl up in a ball under my desk with a bag of chips and take a little nap. I so sleepy. So winning the cutest image award off evan. Go to it, gal. I read in the grauniad that there was an evil takeover bid for
Mmmm, dont you just love winter mornings - The frosty chill, wrapping yourself up in fake furs and the feling of breathing in sub-zero air and feeling your nose go all numb. Mmmmmm... Anyway, you've all been very busy, especially evan who's been positively espadrillian in his posting. Let's have a little look shall we: the infamous Cassell Professional Publishing. Any insider information to be given out..? Hmmmn...? Well it seems that again I have very little to say... Except that Southampton is filled with famous people. The manager of the place where I saw a gig the other day was Ken Livingstone, and Shirley Manson is a barmaid in the student union. Except it can't be her because I don't fancy SM but.... I've got today free and I'm down here on the computers when I could be doing something much more interesting... But as of yet I havent thought of it.
