Re: Sinister: Shoot First Ask Questions Later

Sorry, I was overstating things bit on my review of Looper. But I figured most of you regularly read MM and NME and therefore used to people overstating things.
I figured that too. Hence my flippant comment aboout shooting.
That's the reason I fell in love with the Belle & Sebastian in the first place. They were different. And they were taking chances. I guess the new album going's to be a Revolver as opposed to a Rubber Soul. I just hope they use the breakbeats more effectively on the album.
I agree. Sorry, Carrick, maybe I overreacted a little, but no malice was intended, it was a joke really, and I'm sure regular readers will know that I do like to play devil's advocate sometimes. I certainly wasn't using you as a stepping stone as some people have suggested. A stepping stone to what, I wonder? Still, I digress. I read Carrick's first mail and I'd be lying if I said it didn't jar. I love all B&S records so far, but I don't want Sinister#2, I think you should use all means at your disposal to make great records, whether breakbeats or mongolian nose-flutes if they work. I just thought Carrick's mail sounded more than a little luddite (like the folkies who objected to Dylan going electric), his follow-up letter put such fears at bay. In response to Andreas, who has taken it upon himself to badmouth me snidely and self-righteously, which comes as quite a shock, given the good-natured conversations we've had in the past, can I just apologise once again for being unable (unavoidably) to meet him in Sweden in April and hope this wasn't the real motivation for his rather hurtful and unfounded remarks about "stepping stones" and "cliqueyness". Well I think my pysche was damaged a bit for slagging of Looper. The misunderstandings that resulted just goes to show that, as your mother always said, "If you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all." But anyway, Tag wrote:

No malice was felt. Actually I was surprised that not more malice was thrown my way. I did secretly accuse of you of being a Daft Punk fan. But that probably wouldn't offend most people. Sadly enough.

I repeat, "if they work". My point, was that I thought that the breakbeats didn't work. But, of course, as a result of a sub-standard American education, my writing skills are less than perfect, and the point got lost in the mess of words.

Funny, my dad was at the famous Newport Folk Festival where Dylan introduced his full electric band. I asked my Dad if he was booing, and he replied, "Probably, everybody else was." And I prefer to be referred to as a Luddite, more than a purist. "Purist" has all those evil Nazi connotations. I think I would be quite content if the only music I was to hear for the rest of my life was old folk songs being sung in cozy old pubs somewhere in Yorkshire. As long as Belle and Sebastian was on the bill on alternating Wednesdays and Sundays. And every Monday was drumnbass night. And there was a Soul Brunch from 10 AM to 2 PM every Sunday. And the jukebox had nothing but P!O!P!. Oh yeah, on Tuesdays, a woman who looks just like the young Anne Briggs comes in and sings during the early evening. (I would have said a nice old pub in Scotland, but I don't remember seeing any when I was there.) And on to other news: Tim said....
Funny how who is us and who is them become blurry though, isn't it? If you'd have pitched upround my way in the 1980s with your talk of the Dream Syndicate and Husker Du, you'd have been met with howls of derision, asked why you had bought into Classic Rock so soon, and then probably been bought a pint of opaque cider. You would then have tried to justify your musical taste to young men who were utterly unwilling to listen to your point of view, and who had already decided that you were a P!O!P! traitor. It was us v them, you see.
I forgot about the whole Pop vs. Rock thing. That didn't really happen here in the states. For one thing we didn't have many proper pop bands. Certainly none to start a war over. I remember reading how someone was so offended that Creation was signing Bob Mould's band, Sugar. They even made disparaging remarks about his weight, if I remember correctly. And I wouldn't have bought you a pint of cider, seeing that most Americans in 1984 had no clue that you could buy alcoholic cider at a bar. Still don't. It's nice to see that someone has a crush on the whole list. That warmed my heart, just a little bit.
