Sinister: ramblings
***THE NEW ALBUM*** Haven't got it. Although thankfully the Jeepster site is back up, and I have ordered it, and hopefully it will arrive reasonably soon after it's release date. Flying In (offshoot Flying Nun Records) are the distributors here, but will no doubt charge a small fortune and bring it out in about three months. They have just released the "Mondo '77" single here - for $21.95! (Which is almost three times what a normal single costs here . and given that one of the tracks is only a radio edit) I think it's a rather unreasonable price to pay. So I'll wait and get it off Jeepster someday. ***MELODY MAKER REVIEW*** The sort of review I could have written without hearing the album. Like the sort of review I would write about a Pearl Jam album. "Alright if you like that sort of thing ... sounds like the last one". Which is quite funny because only two weeks earlier they had a 'track-by-track' preview where they called it "the most poetic, coherent, dramatic and mournful album to date". Ummmm . some of us have slightly-longer-than-goldfish-memory-spans, Melody Maker. ***SAD STUFF***(well ... No, not really) It makes me a little sad to think that come the day that I get the new album, that will pretty much it for the next two years. I can't really see B&S going back to recording their albums in a week now. Which is sad. And you really have to question whether the new album, having taken almost 90 times longer to make that "Tigermilk", could possibly be 90 times better. Still, I recall reading that the band had recorded about 20 songs, so that makes another 2 3-track singles worth of material to release. I really hope they do it. ***BUYING STUFF OFF JEEPSTER*** In his mail to the list from a few moths ago, (about closing Jeepster chat) David Kitchen kind of insinuated that more people should buy their records off Jeepster. Which I agree. You should always support the little guys. However, I think a really excellent way of doing this would be offering stuff which you can ONLY buy off Jeepster. Maybe they could do a series of live albums or compilations or something, and the only way you could get them would be from the label. Lets face it . some of this material would probably be of limited appeal .. And may not sell to well in the big chains, but if they had it so fans could pre-order the albums they'd know exactly how many to press. It would be a bit of a money spinner (as doing a live album would cost nigh-on-nothing as I'm sure they record the gigs from the sound desk) and would keep the fans happy. It would also be a nice way of "officially" releasing some of the older songs (Lord Anthony, Rhoda, Paper Boat) which may now never be recorded. I know the (awful) Dave Matthews Band does something similar . and I'm sure lots of other bands also have fan exclusives. Well .. How 'bout it? ***TOTP*** Well, of course, your geographically isolated friend here in New Zealand didn't get to see TOTP. Curses! But one of my friends woke me at 6:48am this morning with a phone call saying "I've just seen the most amazing thing". According to them they were taking the piss rather admirably, with Stuart M standing about 7 ft. from the microphone. Which brings me to a request. Which makes me feel a little shameful, because I don't really like asking for things. But if anyone who lives in a PAL/SECAM country (ie. Not Americans or Japanese) taped the show, and has the capacity to copy the "Legal Man" bit for me .. Well . I'd swoon with joy. Really, I would. If that person also has any of the promos, interviews or TV stuff like "Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner" etc., well, that would be even better. I'm sorry to sound so incredibly insipid asking about this, but otherwise I' ll pretty much never get to see any of this stuff. I asked about this a month or so ago, and nobody replied to my post. (sigh) And of course, I'll gladly send money for a tape, postage etc., or sort out a trade of some sort. Well, enjoy your weekend, kids ............
