Hello! I've just been trawling through the archives (am I the last to do so?) and I had to tear myself away. I suddenly realised how many messages there must be out there, and I got rather scared, and rather giddy. And some of the threads...something about Sid James that Peter Miller pronounced rather strange; hissy turntables, and some other stuff I can't think of. You could feasibly spend forever there, reading as fast as you can, but all the while, a fresh pile of steaming posts dollops into your mail box, and you get no where. It's like when someone told me that you could only read 2000 books in your life, and I thought 'no', but when you add it up, there just isn't enough time Aggh! AAGGGHH! But what I wanted to ask was: Can anyone recomend (and I know you love to) songs that sound like electronic renaissance? Even vaguely? I've thought of The Pet Shop Boys, (things like Where the streets have no name or whtever it's really called, and New Order, and even Pulp (at the time of His n' Hers,) and I really want that sort of ghostly, synthy p!o!p! sound running through my head. So, if anyone has any ideas? the duke says go for the merritt man. stephin merritt, the only songwriter at the moment who comes close to the murdoch man. all these m letters. some coincidence? whatever... his recordings as the magnetic fields (named after the andre breton surrealist writing, fact fans) are monumentally wonderful, and all have their little quirks that make them individual. if you like female vocals that remind you of Alison Statton and sometimes Joni (Blue) Mitchell go for the first two LPs 'Distant Plastic trees'/'The Wayward Bus' (on one cd). if you prefer your male vocals sounding like Johnny Cash and Ian Curtis go for 'Get Lost' and 'Charm of The Highway Strip', the latter particularly if you go for the Cash thing cos it has a lovely electro-country feel. He also records as Gothic Archies, who have one minilength CD and Future Bible Heroes who have the marvelous 'memories of Love' album and an EP. 'Lonely Days' sounds for the all the world like it could be a Microdisney song, and 'You pretend to be the moon' just sends me. I would love to see B&S do some merritt songs, and vice versa. Oh yeah there's also the 6ths record 'Wasps Nests', which has Merritt songs sung by lots of different indiepop stars... Dean Wareham sings 'Falling Out Of Love (With You)' and it makes your heart shatter. just been playing Sinister for the first time in a while, and blow me down, isn't it just the greatest? :-) keep the faith, the duke ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I know the feeling - when I got home from my first day at work on Monday, I was feeling absolutely shattered (maybe 'cos of the 4 mile bike ride home... I'm really desparately unfit at the moment...), so I went into my room and played Tigermilk. By the end of it I was ready for anything... It was so good I just had to rewind the tape and listen to it all again... On a completely off-topic note, does anyone out there know anything about a band called Gravel? Like, how long have they been around, are they signed etc? They supported Hofman (aka Blur without decent tunes) here last night, at about 30 minutes notice because neither of the support bands had turned up, and they were impressively good. All I know about them is what I gleaned last night - namely, that they're from Peterboro and that the singer looks like Ian Brown. And they sound like a cross between snow patrol and the Wonderstuff. Oh, and is anyone out there going to the Pulp fandango in Finsbury Park in a fortnight? The Tall Git PS When's the next picnic? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . This message was brought to you by the Sinister mailing list. .
