Sinister: Rambling Vic Godard anecdote with tangential B&S reference.
Sinisterines, The Duke mentioned Vic Godard briefly, so this gives me a somewhat lame excuse to tell a Pop anecdote. My friend Martin, who taunted me in the sandwich shop the other day by saying "Guess who phoned me on New Year's Eve - Stuart Murdoch", (it was true - he's working on YTV's documentary about the NME) once met the Venerable Vic. He told him that at the 100 Club's legendary punk rock all-dayer in 1976, a journalist was interviewing Vic's famously ramshackle combo Subway Sect when he asked them if any of them had played an instrument before joining the band. None of them had except the drummer who said he'd once played a drum in The Scouts. The journalist was stung by not having heard of this obviously seminal pre-punk outfit and asked him what The Scouts were like. The drummer replied "Oh, you know, green jumpers, badges, neckerchiefs, founded by Baden Powell." I thank you.
