Then, in the first real surprise of the night, the Best British newcomer award went to eight-piece Glasgow folk pop band Belle and Sebastian, who have barely dented the charts in their three-year career, but beat the likes of Steps, Billie and Cornershop in the category, which is chosen by listeners of BBC Radio One.
