Sinisterians - at least those of you who choose to read this post, I've just been informed by the powers that be that my Sinister chords have been connected. Naturally I'm thrilled and, I'll confess, a bit overwhelmed. Okay, so I may have a tendency to overstate things on occassion. In any case I am pleased to briefly introduce myself. Sam is my name and I live in the US of A. More specifically, I live in the capital of the cultural vaccuum that is Western PA: Pittsburgh. At one point in the not too distant past I was studying medicine (though at the time I was dodging bullets in New Haven, rather than collapsing industries in Pgh), intending to become a neurosurgeon or something ridiculous and self-destructive like that. One morning I heard my first B&S song. The song spoke to me of freedom, springtime, fresh air, and the pursuit of things less tangible but more valuable than fame and fortune. Can you guess which song it was? Anyway, I quit medical school to study philosophy, and am now happily pursuing the most intangible ends of all. Best of all, these suckers pay me to sleep late, think a little, and teach reluctant freshmen to think logically. See, B&S changes lives. Today, a funny conversation took place. I was there to enjoy it, so I'll share it with you. Do note that "TIJAMRS" was lilting behind us: A freckly-faced friend said to a hairy, Turkish peer of ours (who we call 'Cash Money' because he's cold and hard) "You know, it just occurred to me: you remind me of Melville's Captain Ahab. Aaarggh!" The Turkish fellow had been in a particularly ornery funk, earning the comparison; even in his best of moods, however, he is loathe to be likened to such characters. He replied to the freckled fellow, "Now, that's a coincidence, since I was just thinking: you remind me of Dostoevsky's Sgt. Shithead." Eerily, the two tokens of the name 'Dostoevsky' overlapped perfectly; I was too busy laughing to point it out to the others, who know the song less well than I. Well, perhaps you had to be -as they say- there. Any other Sinisterites live in Pittsburgh, PA?
