this is hilarious! i have a friend who lives in oshawa and goes to school in peterborough, so i can attest that every word frank says is true (at least about the ontario mullet culture). i think maybe part of the reason people get mullet haircuts and drive camaros (seen the other day: an iroc z emblazoned with "iroc your world") that live in smaller towns is that they don't realise that "the big city" isn't so big after all, and they feel distanced from any sort of reality. so they have to rely on television to form their style, and on smaller networks the only choice is often saved by the bell reruns and odd south american shows and horrible canadian broadcasting. so this whole mullet culture transforms itself simultaneously, i think, you end up in the frame of mind that if you're going to be cool that you should go the whole nine yards and not only go for the mullet, but also get the pink velcro reebok hitops and the spandex pants and the oversize sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder with "trinidad" on the front, and pink lipstick and blue eyeshadow and slouch socks, and find yourself a man who drives a pickup and drinks bud out of one of those novelty hats with the pouches for your beer and the straw that comes down so you don't have to get distracted while you're driving. ah yes, the sociology experiment that is ontario. truly, jessicaxo +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
