Dear Sinister, Apologies for the dire anagram in the subject line. Not the best way to introduce ourselves to you in our first post, but there you go. Our second favourite was “What drastic arse operates?”, so it could have been worse! Just to clarify here, we are two people writing one post, not one person with some sort of multiple personality disorder. Amy has liked Belle & Sebastian for about 4 years now since she heard the Bowlie Weekender set on the radio and fell in love with Stuart’s voice. Since then, she’s been to see them twice, most interestingly last year when she met them at John Peel’s Christmas party. That’s another story really, but needless to say, her most treasured possession is a photograph of her being hugged by Stevie. She can never decide which of their songs she likes best, but she’s pleased to see that Lord Anthony is included on the new album. She likes the sound of a song called “Wrapped up in books” too, but she’s trying not to get her hopes up. After all, a song called “Beyond the sunrise” sounds fairly innocuous until you actually hear it. She’s lurked on and off this list for most of the past 4 years, but has never felt she really had anything to say to 1400 complete strangers that merited posting. In fact, she would have probably never posted at all if Heather hadn’t persuaded her to. Heather was introduced to Belle & Sebastian about two years ago by Amy, while in quiet desperation in the back of a bus en route to a seminar on mechanical engineering that neither of them wanted to go to (just in case you were starting to worry, neither of us are mechanical engineers, we were just misguidedly doing A level physics). She loves them because she can relate to their songs (unlike so much music that’s about…). She loves the list because there are so many other people who obviously feel the same way. We decided to introduce ourselves to you jointly because we found the prospect a little daunting. So here we are, shyly saying hello, holding hands in the corner (it’s not 1995, but rest assured we are just friends). Our motives for posting to the list are twofold. Firstly, we currently abide in Sheffield, which is apparently seeing less picnicking activity than the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We were wondering if there were any sinisterines or sinisterettes in the vicinity who would be interested in some sort of picnic-based meet up. We would happily provide buns (don’t smirk you besmutterers of the list) and other suitable refreshments, plus, of course, our own delightful company. Secondly, at the end of this month we are both relocating to Edinburgh and were wondering if there was anyone who could advise us as to where a sinister person might go out of an evening to hear some B & S tracks being played. We did search the archives on this subject, but the most recent debate on the issue seemed to be about 5 years old and we feel that it might not be the most up to date information available to us. If anyone can help with our query or wants to express their interest in a picnic, please contact us off list.
