Don't bands like "Shipping News" qualify as math rock? I'm not super savvy to that genre, but I've heard many people to refer to it... Shipping News' CD is probably the only one I own. I'll cc my brother. He seems to know all the genre names and definitions much better than I do... pants. At 10:12 AM 12/7/98 -0600, Heather Marie Propes wrote:

Try the Champs (or CH4MP5, if you'd rather). they're always being described as "math rock". Sort of a reclaimation by smart people of heavy metal technical wizardry and complexity. btw, if it means anything to anyone, Tim Green (of Nation of Ulysses fame, and producer of many fine albums) is in the combo. And they're about the furthest thing from B&S i can imagine. t. At 11:19 AM 12/7/98 , Chris Butler wrote:

Math rock is a term generally thrown around those bands from the Chicago-Louisville line, a lot on Touch and Go and Quarterstick. Bands like Rodan, Slint, June of 44 spring to mind immediately, but I would also throw in those groups like Tortoise, Trans Am, Gastr del Sol. Recently, however, I've seen the term pop up for groups that are hovering on the brink of metal, fairly conventional stuff. It may come to be used for any "post-rock" instrumental band that shifts tempo a lot. I'm not sure about an exact definition of math rock, but it usually involves a limited melody (all instruments being somewhat equal) with unusual time signatures that can often change dramatically throughout a song. Not always instrumental, but usually. Chris Butler wrote:

I used to be the biggest Big Black fan on my block, spent 1 1/2 years D.J-ing at WHPK, yet Math Rock passed me by. Wait'll I tell Ander, he's an Algebraic Geometer. Woohoo!
