Oh, the worst one *by far* was the Smurfs. My mom had diabolical methods (usu. involving Pop Tarts) of luring my sister and I away from that show on Saturday mornings so we'd make our ballet lessons on time. She didn't like that show cause it only had one girl, and she was silly, all batting eyelashes and piercing giggles. Anyway, my sister and I watched the Smurfs for old times sake once, and we noticed that there's this male Smurf who wears a white hat like the others, only his has this gaudy purple daisy stuck on it, and when the other Smurfs do something neat, he exclaims "fa-AA-bulous!" in this totally camped-up voice. Hmmm... the animators wouldn't be trying to imply something, would they? wonder what my mum made of *that*... and now the other bit (B and S content, albeit slim) - Did you notice that during "Century of Elvis", you can hear the words to "Century of Fakers" in the background? And that the run-out grooves of the "3.. 6.. 9" singles say "Masterpiece."? (that always gets a smile from me - warm and fuzzy, not derisive) so I hear that the High Llamas will be touring near me... they're one of those groups that I hear *about*, but never actually hear, but they have a Stereolab connection of some sort, so they could be good. So whaddaya say, kids, are the High Llamas worth going to see? Keep in mind that I just paid for me and my best friend's ticket to the radiohead / bjork show, so I'm broke as the Ten Commandments, and that falling in love with B and S has raised my musical standards significantly... love, leeann "Sid James speaks to you like God" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I think that would be Vanity Smurf... Oh, wait, that was the one who was identified by his mirror. No, this one that you describe was Dandy Smurf. Quite ambiguous if you ask me.

Yes!!!!! I saw Stereolab (for the second time! Heh heh!) in December with the High Llamas, and they are WONDERFUL. They sound like the best Stereolab (Metronomic Underground, for example) mixed in with the worst, but most endearing, Paul McCartney songs (like Silly Love Songs or something). There is a little Tim Gaines/Laeticia/High Llamas side project out on Drag City, and, at the moment, the title escapes me... The best thing about the High Llamas live is that they have, like, fifteen people on the stage with various instruments, and the lead guy, whose name I dion't know, picks up a banjo, a guitar, sings a bit, plays the organ a bit, plays the harmonica, etc., turning himself into a one man band in a beautiful symphony of noise. Check out their Hawaii album if you've got a chance. Hope this helps you. -Kristen ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I don't think I will ever get to see the fabled Belle and Sebastian cartoon, but here in America on Sundays we had Davy and Goliath--a stop-motion puppet show about a boy and his dog; it stunk. Perhaps more than the smurfs because it did not have a lucrative licensing deal. btw-I liked that the Smurfs were Schlumpfs in Germany. There were plenty of bad 80s toons: The Thing, Thundarr the Barbarian, Super Globetrotters, Shmoo, Herculoids, Space Ghost. My two faves were Jem! and Kidd Video. About rock stars. Belle and Sebastian should have signed with Dreamworks and started work on their own animated series about seven (or is it twenty?) rock stars sitting idly at home playing Sega. They should get the artist who decorated Senor Mitchell's site to do the designs. francisco ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . No, because every band that signs to Dreamworks must start sucking shortly after they do. It happened to Jonathan Fire*Eater, will nodoubt happen to Elliot Smith, and, while it would be difficult--damn near impossible, in fact--for B&S to suck, it wasn't worth taking the risk. The animated series would hve been a nice perk, though. -Kristen ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I bet I'll get slayed for not thinking about this for ten seconds, but my answer, simply, is that I do not know. Anyone? Anyone? I hope he gets the grammy instead of Celine Dion or Michael Bolton or whoever else makes the bad soundtrack songs played in in the dining hall on Magic 105.3, continuous souft hits. come on, we're trying to eat!! -Kristen ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
