Sinister: Caught up in the snog of old london town
I saw Smog last night. I thought i'd just let you all know that. We bumped into a couple of other listees there (hello!!). I'd never heard them before, don't get me wrong i'd heard of them but not of what they do. Paradise Motel were the first support who bored me to death, then Black Box Recorder who I was really looking forward to. But half way through their set i needed the toilet had to leave and when i came back I couldn't find a seat anywhere from which i could see anything. It was at the Union Chapel (all thoughs hazy memories must flood back now) Smog to be honest also bored me. They just didn't seem to have anything. They need a bassist cause the music just wasn't going anywhere, and the didn't now when to stop. Bassist are good aren't they. ANyway we met them afterwards. God was the singer rude. Didn't smile once. The other guitarist was nice though we had a chat about Foyles the Book shop on Charing Cross road, which he seemed to enjoy. Then we left. A very belated thanks to everyone who came to Tigermilking hope you all enjoyed yourselves. Hey listees, was interested in reading Sam Norman's review of the Smog gig because it mentioned bands that either I love or am interested in. Paradise Motel are an Aussie band (where I come from!) and they purvey a strange, static, dreamy, sometimes eerie and atmospheric mood music. I quite like them (well at least when you compare them to execrable Aussie shit that gets all the press inches like silverchair and Spiderbait). I can imagine how they tread the line between being boring and intense live. But they seem to be getting quite a cult following in Britain, with Radiohead, Massive Attack, Auteurs, BBR, Mogwai and Hefner championing them- to which I say, more power to them:) Black Box Recorder, I absolutely LOVE, as some of you might know, "England Made Me" was my fave album of last year. But how come they are still touring when professional misanthrope Luke Haines has made another Auteurs album??? Shouldn't he be promoting that? Speaking of which, does any listee have this album? Am thinking of getting it and was wondering what it sounded like- LOVE the song "The Rubettes" but that's all I've heard. Did BBR play any new songs, Sam Norman??? Smog is another band I like a lot of stuff from. I can alos imagine how Bill Callahan appear to be rude. But he's probably just shy and uncomfortable with attention. I saw Smog when they came over here to tiny Perth, Western Australia, and he seemed singularly uncomfortable amid all the shouts for particular songs (though it was a mostly appreciative and warm crowd). I quite liked them when I saw them- a slow burning intensity coupled with heart-breaking tunes-nice:) Their new album is quite a change- full of sorta jolly tunes and children's choirs (!) in amongst the usual sparse moonshine music. A deceptive change, much like the new Tindersticks' record I imagine (though have not heard it yet:( Also, saw another episode of that excellently witty and fizzy comedy, "Sabrina the teenage witch" and they played "Wicked Ways" by Garbage- cool huh? ok gotta go- seeya Kin Woo +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the reborn Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
