The other question is: do you reckon they'll go on top of the pops if it does chart? I mean, >they don't even give photographs away never mind go on the telly! It would be totally >brilliant since as the Duke says, they are a complete antidote to most of the stuff around >at the moment, and I don't think I'd ever have seen a band of their like on TOTP before.
I'd love to see B&S on 'the Pops' but with the slight apprehension that if they then rocket to the top of the hit parade loving their music wont be the cosy convivial habit it is for true believers - but I wish 'em all the best, mind. And Keith is right: having them on TOTP would be fantastic by showing what kind of music can be produced these days. I'd put B&S on immeadiately after some ne'er-do-well Britpop-by-numbers band and see if the surly lot can stand the juxtaposition (for all you wrestling fans) with the toppermost of the poppermost. The most unlikely TOTP moment I ever remember was when New Model Army smashed into the top 45 at number 44 with No Rest. They had to stick tape over the obscenities on their T-shirts (which were actually advising people not to take Cocaine) and Slade the Leveller (crazy name crazy guy!) prowled the stage snarling at some teeny-bopper in yellow dungarees who insisted on jigging about clapping her hands above her head like they were Black Lace. i would just LOVE for B&S to appear on totp, live and kicking, whatever the fuck they could get their pert little bodies onto would be super duper cool. As long as it was 'on their terms' naturally. Saw the footage of Dexys on TOTP with the Jocky Wilson still in the background and despite (because?) of this i was still moved. Then read the section in the very excellent 'England's Dreaming' about 'Don't Stand Me Down' and felt like weeping. THEN found a review of the reissue claiming it as lost classic and feeling so ANGRY because some of us knew this and were telling the world so very many years ago. And this has what to do with B&S? Well i like the way they are attempting to do it all on their terms, taking no bullshit, just like Dexys. Stealing master tapes to renegotiate contracts... now THAT i would love to see B&S carry off! :-)

'got no apprehension' as them close lobster dudes would once have sung from the depths of paisley. i want the whole world to hear and have the chance to fall in love with and to Belle & Sebastian. And what's a 'true believer' anyway? Someone who heard them before 'the masses'? Only people who have Tigermilk? I think it's a silly distinction, as noted before... if your faith is true it shows through and you don't need silly cliques and fashions to 'prove' it. It's got something to do with cred and cool and being 'first' because that's POP, but it goes beyond that by a mile. It's called Love and it belongs to everyone of us. Don't stand me down, or around, for i'll never stop saying your name. keep the faith, the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
