Sinister: come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination (fwd)
So, OK, while we're on the subject of Willy Wonka and poetry-quote attributions, I think there's another line in the movie that comes from somewhere else... when Mr. Wonka says, "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." (approximately; haven't seen it in a while.) Do any of you poetry-lovers know the original source? Maybe John's mother can tell us. I don't think it's Shakespeare, but maybe something 19th century... I ran across it in the library once but I can't remember where, and it's been bothering me ever since. That is a paraphrase of one of my favourite lines in the English language. I think it comes from the Merchant of Venice and it's said by Portia I believe... "Mark how this little candle throws it's beam, So shines a good deed in a naughty world". JJ xx

you're not wicked if you don't care about this, but it IS something interesting, in a weird way...
i was out last night, painting the town red, (not a very flattering color for a pale town like Santa Cruz) when i needed to stop at the nearest ATM machine to get cash. as i stepped up to make my withdrawal, what to my wandering eyes should appear on the machine's sickly green LED display but:
"...so shines a good deed in a weary world." -Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
followed by all those nice things like "Please insert your card for service."

It's from a poem by Shaughnessy. Lovely it is too, though I just tried to remember the rest of it and can't. Something about sea breakers and sitting by desolate streams. Archel know-it-all :)

Close: half a cigar. It's Arthur O'Shaughnessy. Here's the full palaver. It's called 'The Two Day Early Monday Poem No-One Asked Me For'. No it's not. We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams; World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems. With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities, And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory: One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown; And three with a new song's measure Can trample an empire down. We, in the ages lying In the buried past of the earth, Built Nineveh with our sighing, And Babel itself with our mirth; And o'erthrew them with prophesying To the old of the new world's worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth. Turt the truth is lying next to you +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
