someone mentioned the top 10 guitar solos, and that sounded like a great idea. 1. Stone Roses - I am the resurrection. This rules it's as simple as that 2. Television - Marquee Moon. Not Tom Verlaine's bit, but the little widdly bit that Richard Lloyd does after the first chorus 3. Neil Young - All along the watchtower. There was this great bit a few years ago on the the telly where Neil Young and Pearl Jam do this and the boy from Pearl Jam do a solo each, and Neil Young's guitar is about 10 times as loud as the other bloke, and he just plays this one long wobbling note and then goes away, totally upstaging the pearl jam lad.
1) Something by J Mascis. Arguably his career is a mere footnote to Mr Jung, but the solo on their version of "Just Like Heaven" rocks like a mutha.
How about the fabulously insane guitar solo on 'A House IS Not A Motel' by LOVE on that greatest of all LA folk/rock/pop/psychedelic type LPs Forever Changes,(Elektra, 1967), it just cuts out abruptly at its speed-crazed height with out so much as a by-your-leave, proving difficult if you choose to DJ with it (although the opportunities to do this are rare, if not non-existent, these days...)
list...hmmm...maybe I can get away with recommending My Bloody Valentine.....! if you haven't heard them, do so! The LP Loveless is the most beautiful noise you'll ever hear!
You certainly can, indeed there should be more such recommendations, how about this for a MBV top-five; 1) Lovelee Sweet Darlene ('New Record By' EP, Kaleidoscope, 1986) 2) Strawberry Wine (12" Single, Lazy, 1987) 3) (Please) Lose Yourself In Me ('Ecstasy' LP, Lazy, 1987) 4) Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside) ('Isn't Anything' LP, Creation, 1988) 5) You Made Me Realise (EP, Creation, 1988) Although of course this is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and pretty much any of the above can be substituted for another (except Nos. 1 & 5). (and probably No.2) Also, on a B&S relational note, I have a friend who insists on the similarity between 'Le Pastie..' and 'Strawberry Wine'... Also, has anybody else heard the new offering by David Gedge? 'Kerry Kerry', Cinerama, on Cooking Vinyl, it's rather fine in a shimmering upbeat pop, strings, and harmonies kind-of-a-way, suggesting to my mind that he retains a degree of his pop (or should that be P!O!P!, (?) I'm new to the list) sensibility of yore Cheers Ed ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . This message was brought to you by the Sinister mailing list. .
