Re: Sinister: spiritualized
Spiritualized is an offspring of Spacemen 3 led by Jason Pierce. They have released the indisputable album of the year called LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE. It is as sonically and lyrically devastating as IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER is charming and inspiring. Every song is a symphonic wonder and the record thunders with gospel choirs, orchestras, guitars and synths and the band is kick ass as well. I can't go on enough about this record. The DARK SIDE OF THE MOON of the 90's. I have not seen them live yet but I will in a couple of weeks. It took a while for LADIES to replace IFYS as my favorite album of 1997, but it is undeniably better. steve matrick

The DARK SIDE OF THE MOON of the 90's.
and this is meant as... a 'compliment'? seems reason enough to avoid as far i can see :-) i have a spiritualized cd single if anyone wants it. 'electricity', part one of a two cds set apprantly, and i have played it a half time. couldn't get to the end. if anyone wants to trade something i'm willing. just been reading simon reynolds 1989(?) book 'blissed out' and reading again about the whole dreampop thang, and ohhh, i still like that whole loop bit, but spacemen 3? and the excuses reynolds makes for prog rock... hmmm. dubious. wonder what he'd make of belle & sebastian? anyway, not that's it's of much interest now because it hasn't happened yet, but there should be a book published sometime (in the new year or so i guess... nearer spring next year?) which will collect missives about such luminaries as Felt, The Claim, Go-Betweens, arab Strap and, strangely enough, our beloveds. (as opposed to THE beloved, who i actually rather liked when they thought they were new order). you'll be first to hear of details when it's fully finalised. keep the faith kids, the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I saw them about a month ago at the UEA (Norwich) and, hand on heart, it was the best and most beautiful thing I have ever experienced in my life (21 years if anyone's interested). Although the band's regular keyboard player - the ravishing Kate Radley, alledged partner of Richard Ashcroft - was not there, the combination of strings, brass, classiccal samples, beutifully fucked-up guitars and not to mention Jason's fantastic vocals floating out amongst us fortunate enough to be there and touching our heartstrings unlike anything ever experienced before or since. They played for a full 2 hour set with not even one interlude between tracks. Jason maintained the musical bliss throughout by blending and fusing each track into each other with what seemed to be spontaneous bursts of mellow genious with his guitar. Perfection. All this was intertwined with breathtaking laser visual effects that took me into what seemed another planet in a dimension far away from the shitty reality of a cold october night in Norfolk. I was in awe of the whole thing, dumbstruck by the chaos and psychedelia thatcould have only been produced by Jason Pierce, a man who refuses to eat any form of solid food whatsoever (seriously!). Jason is well known for his indulges into the world of chemical concoctions, making Keith Richards look like Father Christmas. An earlier album release of his entitled "Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to" in his former band SPACEMEN 3 sums his philosophy nicely. Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space - brilliant, beautiful, epic, a masterpiece, perfection. I could go on and on but this IS a B&S list after all so I'm sorry if I've bored anyone with my rantings. Please buy the album though and you'll find out for yourself.

Did you take any 'substances' whilst watching the band that night, cos you do seem to be have travelled to another plane judging by your review ;-) I remember partaking of some particular herb before seeing Flowered Up of all things and in my state of mind actually thinking they were AWESOME ( god almighty). They had this man in a big polysytrene 'flower' get up and I thought it was BEAUTIFUL, telling all my friends the next day about this fantastic new band. They made one or two half baked 'baggy' singles and sank without trace. Susannah xx susannah@tormentor.clara.net ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . In my student days, thinking magic mushrooms might be a pretty cool idea, and going to see Spacemen 3. And guess what. They were shit.

Now it's funny you should say that. On the first of the two occasions I ever took ecstacy, it was at a Flowered Up gig at Shoreditch Town Hall (this is 1990 or something). And I was convinced that the support were the future of music. Their name - Ocean Colour Scene. Kids - just say no.... Tag ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
