It shouldn't have been for Belle to be the cheese to his dill pickle. It should have been Stuart and Stuart all along, like John and Paul. I like "Century of Elvis". It reminds me of the place where I live. I need reminding. Yesterday there was frost on my windshield when I was going to school and a man tapped on my window while I was trying to read the parking sign and said that his wife was having a baby and he needed a dollar. He said of the people he had approached before "... and they look at me like I'm black". But he was. It was a very interesting rhetorical device. It was strange. I hadn't thought to feel afraid until he said that. But these aren't the sort of things that the song reminds me of. We have a garden in the back and last week he came over and called my attention to the lavender growing in it, but this week he looks at me like I'm strange and leaves the office whenever I arrive. So the song reminds me of the good things like the garden and the lavender and the woodchuck that occasionally shows up and the two squirrels who are his cronies. It's true that you can't listen to the song too often, but it's like the difference between poetry and prose, rereading a book and - well you wouldn't even say rereading a poem. But don't you think near miracles could happen if they truly collaborated? (They might already but I don't think it's likely.) See the difference with Stuart is that the reports of what he is like in person is completely at odds with his sensibility as a songwriter, so you can't just accuse of being charming or t - well I always feel awkward using words like that. Have you seen the film "Naked"? I guess it was shown at Bowlie. Do you remember the man who never wanted to grow old? And there was David Thewlis looking - I was going to say old but I think he looked nice. The saintly haggard look suited him. So in hell everyone will look like a teenage boy and in heaven like Jesus. But I can see the temptation in it. I love the ache in Lloyd Cole's voice on songs like "Her Last Fling".
