That may be, but I'll bet that a lot of the new guitar-based bands coming out of the UK and a lesser degree North America over then next few years will be citing bands like Ride as influences in their sound. Fer example, Embrace gushed about Ride's "Nowhere" in an article in Select a few months back. It takes a few years for the kids who spent their formative musical years listening to shoegazer stuff to actually form bands - but when they do, their influences will be pretty evident. Hipster-ism aside, I think the long-term influence of a band on those that follow dictates their historical importance... man, could that sound any more pretentious? Either way - you get what I mean. The legacy of the Pixies didn't become really evident for a few years until bands like Radiohead and Sugar began name-checking them a lot... speaking of Sugar, the same could go for Husker Du.
