RE: Sinister: Let's hear chatter
Look, I don't even know if what follows is worth saying. Your best bet is to delete it now. But i've written it now so bollocks to it. But don't say I didn't warn you.
Matt quoted:
"For many, idolizing Belle and Sebastian is an offensive move--a way to say that traditional bands are still worthy of debate and attention, and that their traditionally structured songs and sense of narrative are still relevant at a time when these very notions are being messed with by electronic music."
Uhh, well I kind of agree and disagree with that, for various reasons...
1. B&S do represent something of a return to guitar pop for me, after a while away...so for me they say exactly that geetar music is still worthy of attention (though I would prefer to say guitar music can still sound fucking brilliant and make me laugh and cry...)
2. pop is (or can be) all about positioning yourself, for and against, what's wrong and right. But I have to say that B&S are a way to say that guitar music can still be beautiful and subtle and (shhh...) touching without succumbing too much to traditional roccknroll business bullshit and, in particular, laddish boor-rock.
Where I disagree is that I think B&S, if they relate to anything else musical at all, are all about the world of indiepop... I think they're pretty much irrelevant to 'electronic music' (and, brilliant though it is, 'Electronic Renaissance' supports my point...). To make a statement about electronic music (which I take to mean the broad dance field- jungle, techno, hardcore, speed garage, whatever- plus hip hop and stuff) by liking B&S would be pointless, says I.
