Sinister: The chances are slim
I'm done with all of the digests that were filling my mailbox after a fun-filled visit to Our Nation's Capital, visiting everyone's favorite seldom-posting listees, Christian and Susan. You'll be happy to know that Susan and I sacrificed a few brain cells at the altar of the God of Just One More Couldn't Hurt. When will I learn? Sunday morning was spent overcoming waves of nausea, although that could have been brought on by the MTV that we were watching and taunting. I think we hurt its feelings, but I'm glad. When you get right down to the nitty gritty of all this M!O!V!E!M!E!N!T! talk, I just have this to say: there won't be another movement these days, because anytime a group of people with similar interests or goals get together, the whole fucking world feels some twisted obligation to have long, drawn-out discussions and analysis on whether or not said group is a "movement", and whether it's valid and necessary, and what name we should call it, all of which ends up killing it immediately. Hint, fucking hint. I suppose this would be an appopriate time to confess that I adore Belle and Sebastian for the shocking reason that they write brilliant songs. It has nothing to do with wanting to be part of a movement, nothing to do with "Stuart M.'s lyrics are sad and lonely just like me", nothing to do with cardigans (I wouldn't even be able to recognize a cardigan, aside from Nina Persson)...nothing to do with any of that. And I would just like to say once again that I hate the term "twee" as it's applied to Belle and Sebastian. This band writes beautiful songs, end of story, no need for meaningless terms. Wear what you want, throw out your biscuits (unless they're the Southern variety, in which case pass 'em here) and listen to whatever tickles your eardrums. I hope I speak for the majority...
Seymour Stein - isn't that a tongue in cheek criticism of the major = label industry?
No. And frankly, I'm a little surprised (no insult intended) that a fan thinks this. It's been said several million time by sources official and just plain knowledgable that Seymour Stein is just A STORY ABOUT B&S meeting Seymour Stein. There's no criticism intended at all. There are tons of reasons why a band shouldn't sign to a major label *besides* their corporate-ness, and I never cease to admire B&S for realizing that. They chose not to go with a major label, and that's that. Mag Megan wrote:
anyway, i was going to write about how i got my first flame from someone on the list today.
I'm sure I'm not the only one on the list who will gladly offer my capacity for violence to "take care of" said flamer in defense of dear Megan. Especially after that beautiful B&S-esque story of the bagpiper in front of the church. Did you request "Sleep the Clock Around"? Is anyone else slightly worried about Honey? Not a peep since "the incident". We're not orphans, are we? Where's our list mummy? Who will protect us from the mean ol' metalheads who are itching to spill their cheap beer on our twee cardigans? Oops. So I'll be spending the next few days driving from my mailbox to Two Way Pull records in downtown Chapel Hill, seeing which one gets TIGGER 'JAMAS first. My money's on the mailbox, but don't I doubt the record-ordering prowess of the perpetually stoned owner of Two Way Pull. Should make for an interesting race. If worse comes to worse, I'll end up with two copies, but there's nothing wrong with that. At the back of the gym, Reid On my air-conditioning: the "cool" setting. It's summer without leaves. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
