Sinister: Beatniks, lemurs, the usual...
Mighty quiet round these parts all of a sudden, ain't it? Here's a thing. My friend Jo has just lent me this book by Toby Litt called 'Beatniks', about a couple of guys who refuse to acknowledge the existence of anything after that day in 1966 when Mr Zimmerman pranged his pushbike. So much so that when they decide to drive to Brighton, they realise that they can't take the M25 because that would be, like, acknowledging that the world had moved on in the last thirty years. 'They're kinda like Belle and Sebastian', says Jo, 'Cos the world hasn't changed for them since the Go-Betweens left Postcard!' Hmmm . And so to the heated lemur debate. I know for a FACT that they swam to Madagascar. The cute little creatures' aquatic abilities were well known to dastardly German U-Boat Kapitans in WWII, who would strap mines to their backs and point them in the direction of the nearest British ship. This sounds like a good book. Is it?

No, no. They made canoes out of banana leaves. Three lemurs per boat. Two paddled with their hands while the other one steered. They all went together in a furrier (thick luxurious fur) version of the Dunkirk landings. Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . It is, yeah, fantastic! Essential reading for all Kerouac fans. Sort of takes the piss out of the On The Road Myth, but in a nice way. Plenty of gritty and realistic shagging as well. as opposed to... smooth and imaginary shagging presumably? anyway, realism is the externalisation of internalised fantasy, and my realistic is far from gritty. anything that takes the piss out of the keruoac myth is cool by me though... you have to consume his literature in a bubble of myopia, and that's of course the whole fun of it. a tragic story of misplaced trust and self-hatered. book of dreams is the best, yessum. also 'safe in heaven dead' is good for a giggle. "Once God moves the hand, and you go back and revise, it's a sin! My thought doesn't have to be improved - because i got it from Heaven!" hee hee. keep a faith, the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
