okay, so because i have lots of stuff to do and i don't want to do it, i'm going to share the beauty of who and whom with everyone (everyone, that is, who doesn't balk at the subject of the e-mail). so this is how one does it: if, in a sentence, you can put in "him" in the place you mean to put in "who" or "whom", put in "whom". here's an example: she wondered ____ the cardigan belonged to. so switch the sentence around so the blank space is nearer to what it's modifying: the cardigan belonged to ____. you can fill in "him" where that blank spot is, so you can therefore use "whom". got it? it also helps to remember that "whom" always follows a prepositional phrase. yeah, yeah, yeah. off i go ...the grammar police... +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". Not quite. See me post, sent before I read this one, where I use the sentence: "She and me, whom she hates, went to the park." (It was something like that.) The sentence is incorrect grammatically, but not because of the "whom she despises" part. "Whom" is simply the objective form of "who." It does not require a preposition. This is getting out of hand, isn't it? mars@pe.net +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net".
