Sinister: On the trail of Tigermilk....
So, after getting more obsessed with Belle&Sebastian as each day passes I decided to try and track down a copy of Tigermilk.. I mean (I asked myself) How hard can it really be? I live in London with a whole plethora of record shops, I'll find a dusty old copy somewhere no problem. 1.30 pm Berwick Street ,Soho If you can't find a record on Berwick Street where can you? Just been paid, money burning a hole in my pocket, don't care how much the thing costs.. First stop , Reckless Records: Second hand exchange emporium . Start browsing through 'B', hopes are high at this point, but nothing apart from Blondie and Bauhaus, so I check out the 'Rarities ' and picture discs on the wall, but no luck. Finally ask the guy behind the counter to check on the computer, he takes a few minutes and then says" yeh, Tigermilk..?" My eyes light up for a second, until he adds "we last had a copy in August 1996" and how much?? "£4.99" Blimey !! 2.15pm Enter Selectadisc. Come across 12"s of LLPJ and Dog on Wheels. Remember that Dog on Wheels is now deleted on Vinyl, and I only have it on CD, so stick that under my arm (I'm sad like that) and wonder off to look at the back catalogue section. Spend half an hour looking through badly produced fanzines and finally leave with The Sundays new album, Dog on Wheels and something else.... oh yeh, the Beatles White album complete with lyric/poster sheet and posters of the fab four. 3.15pm Right, this is where things get serious. Sister Ray Records. March up straight away to the counter and declare "do you have , or have ever had (and here comes the clever bit) OR KNOW ANYWHERE I CAN GET a copy of Tigermilk by Belle&Sebastian?????? The friendly and helpful assistant takes to his computer..... and returns to the counter to declare: " Six months ago we had one, but it will cost you....£40" So we're getting nearer! Six months ago now, but the price has gone up tenfold too. Pay for She hangs brightly by Mazzy Star at £6.99 (pleased about that one) and move on 4.15pm Grubby old second hand shop where you get black fingers from fingering the racks. No Belle&Sebastian whatsoever but the assistant offers to ring round a whole host of second hand shops in London on my behalf. I thumb through the seven inchers while waiting (for what seems like hours) but don't find anything of interest... He gets back to me to inform me that he knew of one sold ONLY three months ago for £75 *gulp* but since then the price has been escalating out of control, and you can get a holiday in the South of France for less! Spend Two whole pounds and fifty pence on New Order Peel sessions and decide to call it a day. But I'm not finished yet. Susannah, you're a hero. I don't rate your chances but I'm very impressed - keep the journal coming. Meanwhile: here's a stupid idea. It always seems to me that a reasonably surprising number of people on this list hint at having a copy (and you're all too polite to brag, but you want to, go on). So how many of the 1000 copies can we track down? There's 322 people on the list but Susannah and I don't have a copy so that brings it down to 320 so far... So for anyone with a real vinyl copy, or who KNOWS anyone with a copy, let us know: 1. Owner name, location (not house number or I'll break in) 2. Where you got it 3. Are they individually numbered, in which case tell us your serial number 4. Coffee-stains, scratches that tell a tale Send all this to the list with the subject "TIGERMILK REGISTER" and I'll set up a Tigermilk register on the WWW page... Impress your friends! Rung rings around your insurance company! While I'm here two other things: 1. Someone mentioned the Ink Polaroids competition - some of the judges have judged honestly so your efforts haven't been forgotten! I suspect the hold-up is the problem David and Katrina are having with their PC but watch this space... 2. The search page on the Sinister WWW page below is NOW working PROPERLY. Not spewing out gallons of rubbish when you search by full text. Sorry to anyone who wasted their time before. Have to dash - scrumptiously scarey Mogwai LP to listen to and Bev is just pouring her first G&T for Ange on BBC2... (non-UK readers get an extra prize for recognising this one..) Well I have one so thats Steve Genge in sunny Portsmouth & you may as well break in as the guy in the upstairs flat bust the front door last night and has left blood all the way up the stairs :o( Remember kids if you're gonna get very drunk remember your door keys! I got mine from HMV in Portsmouth via the fact that someone phoned me up and told me Vital distribution had I think 100 to sell so got on the phone straightaway. I must apologise for the fact that if I didn't work at said HMV I wouldn't have got one. Apparently Vital sold out in a day :o( I think as well that no other HMV in the country got one so yes I feel suitably humble. The person who told me they had them gave her copy away! No distinguishing numbers as far as I can see. Eek there appears to be a hefty scratch on one side which doesn't affect the sound though. Due to the fact I one day decided to see whether you still get dizzy as you get older (don't ask) and after spinning round & round for a while bumped into my record player. As you can tell there's not much to do in Portsmouth :o) I'll say now if anyone still wants a tape of Tigermilk email me & we'll sort something out. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I think that you get dizzier as you get older. At least I do/did. When I was like 5, that used to be how I would "dance" - I'd stand in a spot in the living room and just spin and spin and spin. I don't remember getting particularly dizzy. As I got older, I added the exciting tummy-lurching-upwards-as-if-on-a-roller-coaster sensation by after spinning for a few minutes, tilting my head to one side...I think if i tried that now I'd hurl for sure. And what the heck does that have to do with b&s...nothing...but I did get a friend to buy a used copy of Sinister yesterday at the record shop. Haven't heard if she loves it as much as she should yet. jj ******************************************** fantastic po box 4492 ann arbor mi 48106 usa www.mindspring.com/~initialgirl/fantastic ******************************************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I think that's how I still do "dance" :o) If anyone's interested a friend of mine found a 7" copy of Dog On Wheels in Brighton yesterday for 1.99 so they're still out there if you look hard enough. She also found two lovely coats & some trousers but I'm sure that's not connected? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . 2. Where you got it I bought it off of a girl who shops at the record store I used to work at. I was talking with her about the band and she said she had one, so I told her I'd pay her $50 for it any time she wanted to sell it. Two months later she did for $30. Can't remember why the price changed. In a sickning revalation I found out that the previous September (before I knew who the band were) the store had sold one for the unbeatalble low
Oakland, California. price of $4.95. That sickened me but not as much as the owner who gouges people $100 for Big Black's banned "Headache" EP and $300 for Spanish picture sleeve Ramones 45s.

there's one residing in the depths of cricklewood at this moment in time, or at least i hope it still is and that the owner has not sold it as she was threatening to not so long ago... belongs to the cover star of both the tigermilk record itself and the dog on wheels, with both props indeed being her own. alas, i myself do not own a copy, and as i said to tim a few days ago, i feel much less distraught about that than i think i would have done if i were in my younger days. :-) keep the faith, the duke -- Tangents On-Line http://www.virtual-pc.com/tangent/ Tangents On-Paper: PO Box 102, Exeter, EX2 4YL, UK tangent@mail.zynet.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Dear Susannah, I've been in Manchester for six weeks now, and trust me, NOWHERE has a copy of Tigermilk (or ever had one), but I did have a nice chat to a bloke in Picadilly Records about B&S. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
