Not wishing to start an argument (but assuming I will for be a pedant), but a snob is someone who judges by social rank or wealth, not by merit. It does not
simply to those at the upper end of these spectrums, a snob can themselves be poor, rich or in-between, and of any class. The phrase 'inverted snobbery'
pertain therefore, is
pish. It has now become common parlance, however, so I s'pose it's fine to use it. Yeah, so *why mention it*
SNOB: a shoemaker or cobbler; a cobbler's apprentice. Anyone not a gownsman; a townsman. A person belonging to the lower ranks of society; one having no pretensions to rank or gentility. A vulgar or ostentatious person. One whose ideas and conduct are prompted by a vulgar admiration for wealth, social position or the ownership of rare indie pop record releases. SNOB: A snob is someone who belongs to or admires the higher social class in society, and despise people of a lower social class; used showing disapproval. Someone who believes that their own special tastes, interests, and abilities are superior to those of other people. No further comment is necessary, is it? On a lighter note, and because I haven't got anything better to do than educate you fleabags: SNOG: If two people snog, they kiss and cuddle each other continuously for a period of time; used in informal English, especially by teenagers. eg:...a couple snogging in the doorway > used as a noun. eg. We had a lovely snog during the film. SNOT: the slimy substance that is produced inside your nose. I'LL GET ME COAT: expression used as a means of bidding farewell by people who are aware that they are boring everyone senseless for no good reason. I'll GET ME HOD: As above, only more working class. Peregrine J Tarpaulin ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . also an american term, apparently, for an arrogant kid. hence the otherwise inexplicable song (not snog) by lisa germano (on 'love circus') called 'i love a snot'. my favourite song-title of last year. espadrille ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Yeah, it is. My dictionary is much older (and therefore *obviously* vastly superior) to yours. Or anyone elses for that matter. Whilst on the subject, did you know in Victorian times to say someone was 'naughty' was tantamount to calling them evil ? No, my dictionary isn't that old. It's what I was told when I was a nipper. My interest in etymology is no better or worse than anyone else's interests. See. I can do it. Turt Thanks PJ for not leaving the rest of my email in, thereby saving me from looking like a double posh bastard. Ish. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
