it's by Toby Litt is called Beatnik I thought this rang a bell... Last year or earlier this year we were at a John Cale show at the Supper Club in NYC, and met Toby Litt in the crowd. Shy little fellow in a black leather coat. My friend spent the evening talking to him and later regretting that she didn't offer to show him the city. She went all out to get his first book of short stories from the UK (it wasn't available here) and said it was great.
