Let me put in my vote for A Prayer for Owen Meany...it is spectacular. Not to mention it's the rare book that doesn't subreference his other works (i.e. the dancing bear motif, or the hotel motif...). I just reread it over the holidays, and I was blown away all over again. I grew up near where the book takes place, so it's extra special to me. I like to think his books might make it into the Canon someday, but I know I'm dreaming. Irving's other books are good, too - but this is his crowning achievement.
