As in "I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world"? One of my favourites at the moment. The only other act I recognise is Brand New Heavies. They're in trouble with Mattel because the real Ken isn't bald. Stylophone fact: Rolf Harris didn't just lend his name and demonstration talents ( "Water..kids love it!") to the Stylophone, he was actively involved in its conception and development. Rolf has a long standing interest in experimaental music, as is shown by his involvement with Joe Meek stars The Tornados. So he's not just some wobble board playing plonker. At a concert during the ill-fated "Brian is Back" campaign, the Beach Boys suffered a serious theremin malfunction during "Good Vibrations". Luckily, a member of the road crew had been practising with his Stylophone earlier in the day, and immediately rushed it over to Mike Love, who made a few bad jokes and then proceeded to play it during their second attempt at "Good Vibrations". Unfortunately, he had trouble holding the Stylophone up to the microphone, playing it in the correct sliding manner, AND singing all at the same time. Carl had a fit of the giggles and Brian looked on bemused, soon to revert to his hermit-like existence. So it's not just Belle and Sebastian who have problems with their Stylophone on stage. It can happenn to anyone. Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . This message was brought to you by the Sinister mailing list. . Hmm, Peter, do you own a Stylophone? If not, maybe we could all save our pennies, so that Peter has a lovely brand new Styophone for Xmas, and we can hear his very own Stylophone mishap stories instead of Rolf Harris & the Beach Boyz... ...sorry, the stories are cute really :) I want one! Anyone got any good B&S promo ideas for the new EP? Outrageous, expensive, just eye-catching stuff, please mail the list! Has anybody heard Rolf's new album ("Can You Tell What It Is Yet?")? It's full of covers of recent pop songs. I fancy buying it, cos Rolf is a true star. So, then, which B &S song should Rolf do a cover of, and why? Rhys ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . What a dangerous question you've asked, Rhys. I have successfully resisted the temptation to formulate a top ten, but this is too much. I think Belle and Sebastian should do a cover of "This Great Big Wolfhound Standing Staring at Me, Licking His Chops and Weighing Me Up For Tea" with Isobel castigating Stuart at the end for frightening the dog, "Now what did you want to go and do that for, you big lummox? He's only a wee puppy, you know!" "I've Lost my Mummy" would be quite appropriate as well, if only to dispell the notion that Belle and Sebastian are fey and twee. As for Rolf covering B&S, I would vote for "Fox in the Snow", so that Rolf could showcase his no doubt excellent impersonation of a fox snuffling around in the snow looking for his dinner. Incidentally, the great man will be appearing inn the intimate surroundings of The Garage in Glasgow on November 15th. So Glasgow residents will be able to shout out requests for their favourite Belle and Sebastian songs. I think it'll probably be a good night out, all postmodern irony aside. After all, Rolf has been at it a few years, so he ought to be good by now. Nice voice too. Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . He's probably change it to "Dingo in the red dust" or something like that tho'!

I used to have one when I was little, hence the unnatural fascination with this Sinclair C5 of the musical world. The only thing I could play on it was Skater's Waltz. My mother said it sounded like Sooty and Sweep. The Stylophone website seems to be out of order, but there are theremins aplenty out there.

I'd really like one. I've got a kiddie's xylophone on which I play the first bit of "Till I Die" by the aforementioned Beach Boys. But then along comes the difficult bit and I'm a goner. The story of my life. I can play the beginning of several Echo and the Bunnymen classics on the guitar, as well as the beginning of "Egyptian Reggae", but they all have difficult bits sooner or later.
I want one!
Well just wait until Sarah comes whizzing past on her roller skates playing hers and leg her up. While the little birdies are still flying round her head tweetinng merrily, grab her Stylophone and run off

Get the person who did the cartoon (on Andy's website) to do another one, maybe the story so far or something, and print up cute little comics instead of the usual CD inlay cards. Also, produce the abominable cassette single, so that Woolies don't have any excuse. There, two reasonably sensible suggestions. I don't know what's come over me.
Cheers, Katrina.
ps Peter, thanks for the gossip!!!
It's not gossip, it's from the official Rolf Harris website, honest. Peter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . I also seem to remember seeing a reprint of an old newspaper ad with David Bowie singing the praises of Stylophone. Then again he always was a bandwagon jumer so he was obviously copying the god-like Rolf. Not sure who persuaded my parents to buy a tasteful wood effect one though? Seriously doubt it was Bowie.

Well I recently got misty eyed over the passing of shaped picture discs. Remember some especially fine Iron Maiden ones including one of a brain. So howsabout a limited run of them shaped like band members heads? Then fans could also turn them into those eye catching picture disc wall clocks? maybe time I went to bed? steve x ----------------------------------------------------------------------- . Well, they'll only have an audience of mouthy 13 year old girls soon anyway, and they might not get quite as much out of B&S as we do... now if we could just take over the studio for ONE week... we could put on a fantastic show of the intelligent, sensitive, perverse or underrated... B&S in star slot, Momus and Minty to scare the little kiddies, Orlando and various other lovely types, and...hmm...who'd present? ideas anyone??? :) Love Kate xxx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
