Sinister: She, me, I, you, everybody, everybody.
I suppose I'd better start off with a little Nell and Sir Bar Stein content, since I haven't been on that thread for, ooh, two months or so, and the wibble vultures have been circling of late. My question to you is this: (And by you I mean those of you who hail from the green, hilly place known as Scotland) My girlfriend (and me voting for list crushes too, the shame...) hails from Ayr, and she loves B&S almost as much as I do, but she seems to have a distinct advantage in that much as I find the music evocative of emotions, colours and feelings, she feels a kind of small-town Scottishness about it that hits home. Is this a part of the overall emotion B&S inspire that I am doomed eternally to miss? And now a grammar lesson. The whole she and me thing strikes me as one of the pathetic attempts by grammarians to enforce illogical rules onto a perfectly decent and flexible language (cf split infinitives, split away people - no-one can lock you up for it). The idea is that if you take either she or I away, the sentence should still read grammatically. Of course if you were to say she gave it to me (oo-er) then that would be fine (oo-er). She does not give it to I, nor do I give it to she, I give it to her... ...which is all fantastically dull, but important if you want to successfully get on in life (apparently). Did you know (don't you just hate it when people say that, and when they rush up to you saying guess what, guess what?) that Shakespeare used around 17,000 words in all his plays, and that about one tenth of them he made up himself? Presumably we're talking about adding endings, as opposed to say, inventing a whole word like fgtho'd (to rhyme with Orange), but still, I give the man a lot of respect for that. In fact it inspires me to enter this fine and dandy rhyming verse competition. I have a good knowledge of rhymes, as I knew someone called Gabriel Cheng, whom I nicknamed Table Leg on the basis that it rhymes with his name. It does you know. Try harder. Believe. Neil Xx If you only listen to one song today, make it "Monument for a dead century" by loveable scouse mad-indies the Boo Radleys. Altogether now, "nobody lives here any more...We're building a monument, for a dead century". +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ +---+ Brought to you by the Sinister mailing list +---+ To send to the list please mail "sinister@majordomo.net". Actually, I'm a linguistics minor, and this stuff fascinates me (as does she and me, but we'll save that for another grammar lesson). However, it's a common fallacy that Shakespeare made up 10% of his written vocabulary. Most scholars of the subject would suggest that nearly all of the words he used were already in use. He, however, was the first to commit them to print. Makes sense, considering that some of the people using these words were not of a literate class. Where it gets really interesting is that certain words and expressions correspond to the various classes represented by characters in his plays. (See also Faulkner and Twain, who utilize this same accuracy in dialect and regional expression.) So, you're partially right, and 99.9% of the population would probably assert that WS did indeed make up 10% of his vocabulary. However, since I have an exam coming up on this subject, I thought I'd share my two pence. Belle and Seb content? I can't think of any words in their songs that rhyme with orange. But I like it when I mishear "be honest" as "be us" in Get Me Away, I'm Dying. As promised, here are the final results. I promise I didn't make any of the votes up. I may have messed some up, but never mind; some mistakes from last time have been corrected, and the rest are at least definitively wrong now. People who did get votes: it's over to you. Find out who voted for you and get loving. And don't forget to tell me when you do - I love a good gossip. People who didn't get votes: better luck next time. I didn't get any last time, I know how you feel. You'll just have to post more smut from now on to get noticed. Anyway, enough rambling I hear you all cry, tell us the results! Well I don't think anyone can argue with the winner, a thoroughly deserved victory... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15 votes: HONEY PAUL MITCHELL 11 votes: Peter Miller Fluffy Sarah 10 votes: Me! 9 votes: Magnetic Megan Lehar 8 votes: Stevie Trousers 6 votes: Chris Leonard 5 votes: Genevieve Wesley 4 votes: FunkySeb Keith Watson Joss Moorkens Erin Lewis Katrina House 3 votes: Philippe Corpora Arenacea Mick McMick Oon Brad Andrew (Seymour) Nicol Charlotte Hall Tara Widmer Tag Linda Kerr Martin Horsfield Archel Playforth Lesley J Miller Courtney Owen Madame Cholet 2 votes: Reid Dossinger; Christa Chaffinch; Adrian Evans; Pam Berry; Jessicaxo; Lady Penelope; Sarah Wheeler; Laurel Girvan; Michele Waggner; Brian Winters; Beth Arzy; Sandra Volaric; Claire Timmins; Elisabeth (Petula); Calumn Shearer; Matthew Hintz; Henry Thomas; St Lucy 1 vote: David Kitchen; Jake Reichart; Mark Casarotto; Susannah; Nick Dastoor; Jessica Murphy; Liz Daplyn; Joao Henrique Horst; Kevan Cooke; Matthew Crooker; Becka; John Warrender; Xavier; Gary Done; Vicky Parkinson; Monaz; Jennifer Phillips-Bacher; Anastasia Signoretta; Minnie Riperton; Mike Jones; Tim Hopkins; The Duke Of Haringey; Jake (aka Kenny); Ed Mason; Nick Marino; Andrew Dean; Kristen Shaffenberger; Sandra Duric; John Murtagh; Matthew Kelly; Kelly Ryan; Jonny Kat; Julie Smith; Ethan Sincoff; r.h.; Janine Queen Bee; Lorelei Tremelor; Emma Wilton; Neil Dewhurst; Sarah Hall; John Monroe; Marco 7; Julia Brown; Nicola Stip; Chloe Sevigny; The French Girl on John Warrender's Part Invitation; Mystery Date; The Entire Shalala List; Teddy Pendergrass; and The Entire Sinister List. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- So there you have it. I'm going to allow that "Entire Sinister Mailing List" vote stroke my ego for now. Unless that was my vote, in which case I now feel somewhat dirty... ALL: Although up until now i have found it imperative to remain a silent observer of this list I have decided to write to wonder if anyone (else) heard the review of The Boy on NPR's "All Things Considered" earlier this evening. They basically just talked about the unavailability of Tigermilk, the U.S. tour and The progress B&S have made with this album. It also compared B&S to The Smiths by using a quote from Mr. Morrissey that had something to do with Music too precious something something something... that Mr. M had made in reference to The Smiths and which the reviewer found apllicable to B&S...If anyone heard this while not working in a loud resturant (as I was) I would be interested to know what exactly that quote and any other impressions of the NPR review. i like rehashing old threads and i figure its excusable since i didnt exist on here when it came about originally well, having had sex twice both times being rather unsuccessful(i wont go into details im hardly an expert on the subject but good post sex music is Friends Of Dean Martinez, i spose that it could be used while in process but it fits the feeling afterward perfectly i found, I would reccomend Dixie Chicken by Little Feat but like I said it wasnt the most successful coupling in history (partially due to the fact that i made the girl move and fastforward when a song skipped) ok i prolly should not have shared any of that by the way this girl was someone i met online, im not against virtual relationships, she didnt treatme like shit causewe met online its cause she was an evil bitch, ahem pardon the bitterness ill go back to my cave now ----Ev -- I'm just a shy boy sitting in a house When everyone's gone

I heard it too! I freaked out! I definately wasn't expecting that! They talked a lot about "Seymour Stein" (which I think is the least strongest song on the entire ablum) and the whole menaing of it, which I found unnecessary. It was kinda bad. It was the same as all the others: They sound like Morrissey/Smiths, their following is like the following the Smiths had. There weren't any outstanding quote to relate back. It was basically the same as another thing on them. What else did they play? I forgot. I'll tell later. I wrote them down. There were only 3 songs and they were far from the best off the album. Disappointing, yet very exciting. that was the first mention or music Of B&S I have ever heard on the radio, too. ...CARMEN... *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 11/18/98, at 8:32 PM, Hooded Child (#47) wrote:

npr pisses me off first theres the music clips betwen segments which are never credited then there's teri grosss which is bad enough, she is sooo friggin dumb andd aannoying grrr but what i really cant stand is when they review a record that they like, example" rem-up claimed it was one of the greatest pop albums of teh decade or soemthing like that, i screamed at my radio for at least 10 minutes how many fucking pop albums do you think that old man listens to? howabout any elephant 6 album, B&S of course, i could list forever its one thing to say its a good album (not that i will ever say that about anything with stipey singing on) but one of the best in teh decade my arse raaaawr i hate lists soo much or anything approaching lists like thaat ok well i gues sthats enough of a tirade against npr, they expose old people to good music but their interviews are so degrading at times, they're a buncha stuffy old people trying to seem open minded no offense to old people on the list by any means its just these older people on npr ----Ev -- I'm just a shy boy sitting in a house When everyone's gone
