Re: Sinister: Other bands that get you off musically...

Surely a more interesting question would be, "what _non-pop_ music floats your boat?"
Endless lists of pop bands are starting to drive me crazy in this season
of the top ten. OK, I'll start, Steve Reich Loudon Wainwright III
aaagh! can't go with you on this one here... i listened to a few tracks ages ago cos my mates were into it and i couldnae stand it :-(
Always struck me as a bit of a smug fucker ol' Loudon. John Prine would be my preferred alternative, but sans electrification. He was fucking brilliant at Glastonbury three years ago. Randy Crawford soundtracked my summer with her 'Secret Combination' CD. WC and the Maad Circle's Curb Servin' continues to amuse me, in every possible sense. Jimmy Smith's 'Home Cooking' er, cooks. Lost my favourite Drifters CD, but ain't lost my Irma Thomas vinyl. Towering above all of 'em though is George 'No Show' Jones. Angelic.
... and even though i'd say that these people make records that are Pop to me simply because of how i'm defining that these days, here's a
few of mine:
Dexter Gordon Jon Hassell Les Baxter Ernest Tubb
Actually i was just going to write a piece about the Country influence
in B&S. maybe tomorrow.

Hmmm, this I'm looking forward to. Admittedly it's the wee small hours of Sunday morning after two heavy nights on the bevies, but I can't quite see it meself. Only links my (temporarily, honest) addled brain can come up with are the distinctive singing and the 'clever' lyrical content. But they're pretty different variations on the two themes. Then again, 'Country' covers a whole swathe of music from shit to shinola and back again. If you think Gram Parsons 'She' or 'A Song for You' or ''Hickory Wind' or plenty of others and then think B & S maybe you notice the ability to take 'mundane' subject matter and fashion something that touches nerves. Gotta stop now 'cos I'm making a bad job of doing the Dook's job. night night evabody yerluvinunvleTurt ----------------------------------------------------------------------- .
