Hi all, I am very glad so many people responded to my mail - I knew there would be many good people on the B&S list. For all those who didn't get the message the first time, I'll renew my offer: I will make you a copy of the Black Sessions and Tigermilk (it all fits neatly on one tape). This I will do FOR FREE. What I would like from you in return is a donation to an organisation that helps the poor people in Honduras. That is, children in the first place. I am member of an organisation you might know, called PLAN international. Through them I've been having a foster child in the middle of Honduras for 2 years now. I am planning to visit her (it's a girl, age 6) early next year. That is, if I know she's still alive. Anyway, it is a very trustworthy organisation, and you know exactly where your donations will go. There are several ways to do this, just pick one. 1. You can donate to PLAN in your country. PLAN has offices in all major western countries. I asked them to send me the account numbers, but you might just call by youself: Homepage: http://www.plan-international.org/donors-en.html Adresses I picked out: Sweden Våra gironummer är PG 90 07 01 - 4 samt BG 900 7014 Luntmakargatan 46 11140 Stockholm Telephone: 46 8 58775500 Fax: 46 8 58775510 http://www.plan-international.org/sverige/ UK 5-6 Underhill Street Camden London NW1 7HS Telephone: 44 171 4856612 Fax: 44 171 4852107 US 155 Plan Way Warwick Rhode Island 02886 Telephone: 1 401 7385600 Fax: 1 401 7385608 2. If you live in or near a large city (with a Citibank) you might put the money on my account and I transfer it immediately. Stephan Hammer Citibank Germany account # 0212741345 Bank # 300 209 00 3. For US residents Dave gave me the address of another organisation, I included this at the end of the mail. 4. For the amount you are free. The more, the better, of course. Just remember, I am doing this for free and shipping to the US is especially expensive, so keep that in mind while deciding upon the amount. Anyway, thanks for your help. Concern America Honduras Disaster Recovery Campaign
Concern America (C/A) has worked in Honduras for more than fifteen years, particularly in the northern coastal communities in the department of Yoro. This area is often adversely affected by severe rains, yet such is the only land available to poor, rural families. The recent deluge from Hurricane Mitch has been especially devastating to these same communities. The disaster has left the people without food, clean water, (for many) access by land, and, in a large number of instances, their very homes.
Immediate needs, as told to us from our teams on the ground, are food, clean water, and medicines. Already the incidences of respiratory, skin, and gastrointestinal diseases are on the rise and need to be arrested before people become weakened and susceptible to even more deadly diseases, such as cholera, which is always a serious threat in such situations.
C/A is dedicated to caring for the people in the communities with which it has worked in the past. While promising not to duplicate aid and services available from relief agencies, C/A will work to meet the health and water needs of these very communities. Already oral rehydration liquids are being preapred for and distributed to those most vulnerable and in need. Appropriate antibiotics and fungicides are also being made available.
Since the prevention of life-threatening epidemics is a priority, two international C/A teams will be dispatched to the region (1) to assess the water situation, (2) to test water supplies, and (3) to seek out clean, reliable water sources. They will work hand-in-hand with C/A local teams by bringing in Del Agua testing equipment and training the local teams.
C/A has the great advantage of being able to work through the local teams it has spent ten years training in health, public health, community organizing, and adult literacy. Team members have for years walked and bicycled along rural paths to the most isolated of local communities. They are well positioned to seek out and assist those most in need and vulnerable.
If you would like to assist this Concern America effort, please make out your check to Concern America and send it to: Concern America 2020 N. Broadway P.O. Box 1790 Santa Ana, CA 92702. (Please designate on your check: Honduras Disaster Recovery Campaign.)
Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Of the 191 countries worldwide, it ranks 149th in daily calorie intake and has a 132nd ranking in the category of "human development factor" (for purposes of comparison, the U.S. ranks 7th in both categories).
