the list, and even if people were just motivated by that, it'd have
worked!!! But I think at the moment people are posting because they're
genuinely interested ...after all, there are some familiar faces here,
but also others who have never met before and may be just discovering
they have similar interests... the list is but young... it's like
talking to people in the queue for a gig, if you will. Anyway, the bus
thread is FUN. Buses are brilliant. However, you have my full permission
to flame me if I start talking about the Manchester Metrolink or
something in a manner you consider to be tenuously connected (and be
warned, I know a LOT about it. I did my Economics project on it. :-) )

I'm not without sympathy here. Mailing lists that remain rigidly on-topic do tend to be somewhat dull (I've been on several - and have unsubscribed from most). I suppose my main gripe here was against the cynical rush to post as much to the list as possible in order to win the tape. Yeah, it's good to talk, but I'd prefer it if people actually had something worthwhile (or witty) to say - even if it's about buses (I think trains are better than buses though). Trouble is, when a list gets as large as this one, unless there's a degree of self-regulation among subscribers, the whole thing just breaks down. I've seen it happen many times before, and it's usually the people with the most interesting things to say that leave first. I can, however, recommend a mailing list that is dedicated to the discussion of buses, trains, fish, sheds, squirrels, bagders, etc, to anyone who e-mails me privately.

By the way (and I know this is an old thread), but my cat, "Little Gary", has a great interest in postmen. Why, he even scent-marked the postman's bag a few weeks back. Luckily the postman saw the funny side of it.
