Sinister: pop and non-pop

	Mmmm, it's impossible. I'm not really trying to find a word for
a particular kind of music, or particular kinds of music, I'm talking
about a word for a particular kind of feeling. Not just a kind of
happy/sad/excited/calmed/whatever, but that feeling when something
really sends you, y'know.

	I don't think it's toal toss (but then you do and you're right
and I'm wrong, prob'ly...;-)). I'm sorry if it irritated you. Not even I
am dumb enough to believe that there are objective rights and objective
wrongs when it comes to music.

	 The point I was trying to make (and clearly I should do it in a
less ham-fisted way next time) was that great pop fun is to be had by
taking up (relatively) arbitrary positions and holding on to them for
dear life, until you get bored. This is pop, and it's not doing anybody
any harm to hold a few extreme opinions on the merits of the likes of
Deep Purple.
	I remember the excitement I felt the first time I heard Subway
Sect's 'A Different Story', heard him sing 'We Oppose All Rock And
Roll'. the power of saying these things is part of the great power of
pop. It was important to me that I loved McCarthy and hated the March
Violets (or whoever) in 1986.

	There's a great tradition of drawing arbitrary lines: Wyndham
Lewis's Blast/Bless way back; Tom Vague did the same thing. And the
famous Westwood/Rhodes T-shirt. "One day you're gonna wake up and know
which side of the bed you're on". Sometimes it's fun.
	And I don't think I'm too off-beam in saying there's a lot of
pop-good in getting up folks' noses from time to time. It's not as
though I'm advocating violence or anything, or that I advocate the
taking of such extreme positions outside POP! (the feeling). See, pop
allows that creation of self....

	And let the person who has never called a band or a record shite
stand up and take the rosette for best liberal of the year. Ten years
ago I would have spat 'hippy' at the endof that sentence. I shan't
today. See, I have grown up a bit.
