I think that the unrequited love that you are talking about was just
referred to as 'the little red-haired girl' in the books, I always found
it so sad when he plucked up the courage to go to her front  door and
chickened out before she answered or it was her gran that answered and he
ran away. aaaaahhhh, L'amour! it'll break your heart
