Hi
Stuart M. was 28 when I interviewed him (in May). I know because he said "I'm 28 years old and have been writing songs for four years." Perhaps he's 29 now. In any case, he looks rather young.
In other B&S news, the band was given a brief mention in the New Yorker magazine within an article on Britpop (or Dadrock as they called it). The article was mainly concerned with bands such as Radixhexd and Oxxxs (wasn't sure if my message would get through if I mentioned these bands). The mention was regarding how easily it is to be an unknown band in one week, and to have a hit the next since the elite DJs can rely on their own musical tastes rather than chart positions.
Food for thought
Matt

Subject: Sinister: Barcelona gig review
Hello everybody,
Here's a very rough and ready review of our heroes in Barcelona:
ARE BELLE AND SEBASTIAN NECESSARY ON A BICYCLE?
The beautiful old square was packed to the rafters, except there weren't
any rafters because it was an open air concert. People were precariously
perched on the gargoyles instead. These gargoyles were apparently used
in the Middle Ages to pour boiling oil on unruly Jethro Tull fans. In
spite of being surrounded by other pop attractions, including Primal
Scream, people seemed only too happy to stand around packed like sailors
in a leaking submarine to see Belle and Sebastian strut their funky
stuff.
They leapt straight into "Tigermilk" at which point we buggered off for
a drink. Pop salvation is one thing, dehydration is another. When we got
back it was obvious they were getting a bit shirty due to malfunctioning
monitors and the egg-bound sound of some of the rented instruments. The
monitor man, bless him, was a distant cousin of Manuel from Fawlty
Towers. Say no more.
It all went by so fast I can't really remember the set list, most of
which I didn't recognise anyway. They did "Dylan in the Movies", which
has always been one of my least favourite songs because it reminds me
of...well, Dylan in the movies, namely the terrible film....whoops,
can't find my Dylanology books...I think it's called "Streets of Fire"
or something equally ludicrous. But I digress. The song is much better
live than on record, rollicking and celebratory. Next came a new song,
"Wash Your Feet in the Sea", and then "Get Me Away From Here, I'm
Dying", one of my all time favourites because it's so joyously apparent
that the singer ISN'T dying at all. Up until now I've had my
reservations about Belle and Sebastian, but now I can put my hand on my
heart and say that they are as good as Orange Juice, my own teenage
obsession, the band I didn't want to share with anybody, the band that
taught me it was okay to feel things. I like to think B&S are fulfilling
that purpose for a growing number of lost sheep. The meek SHALL inherit
the earth after all. Giving eskimo kisses to torturers' assistants,
tickling the feet of international business men. In short, spreading
love where love doesn't want to go.
Isobel was dressed in a very fetching AC/DC school uniform, but sadly
she didn't attempt the Angus Young Hoppity Skippity Funny Walk with her
cello. The keyboard player (Chris?) was tinkling away merrily behind his
Rick Wakeman bank of vintage keyboards. He was wearing a jumper supplied
by the Lenny Godber Gentleman's Fashion Boutique in West Bromwich, now
sadly demolished to make way for Spaghetti Junction. Stuart Murdoch
looked very smart in his Sunday School trousers and sensible sandals.
At one point the drummer was called upon to mark the re-release of the
Led Zep back catologue with an impromptu drum solo. It sounded like The
Mighty Thor parking his mini in a crowded Safeways car park. Then the
rest of the band joined in, rocking out as if they were possessed of
several devils, Stewpot grinning like a kid who's just been invited to
provide handclaps for the Bay City Rollers' new single on "Jim'll Fix
It". The cello was groaning like a hump-backed whale in the final stages
of labour. It sounded like a cross between My Bloody Valentine and Miles
Davis' band in the early seventies. Rented amps were turned up to
eleven; someone had to take the back off the Wurlitzer piano and pour
some water in it, otherwise we might have had the first pop-induced
inferno since Brian Wilson abandoned "Smile".
Oh, and Stuart laughed just after starting a very tender piano ballad.
Whatever would Elton say?
I can now clear up the mystery of the prolonged instrument changes. On
some songs a laughable little xylophone is featured. It looks like
no-one is willing to play it for more than one song (hardly surprising),
so they have to keep changing round. A bit like when you're playing
football with your mates and nobody wants to be goalie.
Can't think of anything else to say. Thanks to all concerned for making
a wonderful weekend possible. It really was like "Jim'll Fix It", and
you can't say fairer than that now, can you?
Peter

you posted a few weeks ago to the indie-list saying that there was "little

Quite agree - the arguments against bootlegging are almost entirely centred
(rightly so) around protecting the earnings of the people who have done the
work. This case is weakened somewhat when the bootlegged item in fact no
longer provides any earnings and - if unreleased - is unlikely to ever
again. It's even lamer when you consider the fact that those fanatics who
are responsible for the bootlegging in this case would be more than happy
to pay (over) the full price for a proper copy.

Subject: RE: Sinister: Matt H's thoughts on B&S
Let's not forget that home taping is illegal too, boys and girls. The =
argument here seems to be that it's ok for a few fans to swap tapes, but =
not ok for Tigermilk to reach a larger audience via bootlegged cds. =
This seems to me to be somewhat hypocritical, and also rather naive. I =
don't know what the group's reasons for not wanting to re-release =
Tigermilk are, but it's a simple question of supply and demand. As they =
get more popular, greater will become the demand for the lp, and =
inevitably bootlegs will appear - there's money to be made, after all. =
That money should go to the band, I'm sure we're all agreed, but, denied =
the opportunity to buy the record legitimately, I can't see too many =
fans wrestling with their consciences if the opportunity to buy a =
quality bootleg cd were offered to them. I'd personally have no problem =
with this (I do own a reasonably well dubbed tape, by the way), =
although, I might add, that I would also buy an official lp, were it to =
be subsequently released.
David Kitchen said that by stopping bootlegging, they [Jeepster?] are =
trying to protect both us (the fans) and the band. I could agree with =
this if the record was now or in the near future to be made officially =
available, but since Belle & Sebastian "continuously express an interest =
in NOT releasing Tigermilk again in the UK and only a mild interest in =
the US option", then somebody please explain how our interests are being =
protected. By not making Tigermilk available, the band are denying this =
great music to their audience, and denying themselves the financial =
rewards they so richly deserve. The presence or otherwise of bootlegs =
makes no difference to this equation (unless we are not being told the =
whole story). I guess it could even be argued that in this situation, =
bootleg copies of the record might actually further the lp's reputation, =
as this is the only means by which most people can hear it. Not that I =
am condoning the production of bootlegs, you understand.....=20

that. The way the archive gets constructed was bashed together
by me as if with sellotape in an excited rush so I'll revisit it.
If anyone else notices this, could they mail me *privately* with
a copy of the message that didn't make it.
o Keith (Watson): what's all this about "book-lined graves?". Intrigued
but clueless.
o Has anyone seen mention of any of our sites/lists in the press? Would
be interested to see if we ever get a mention. In fact a bit nervous -
when The Guardian mentioned the best Teletubbies site it was closed
down within 24 hours because of a ridiculous increase in the number
of accesses...
o Sexuality/gender - ambiguity in sexual orientation in lyrics can get a
bit... hmm I suppose obvious to these ears, viz Morrisey in the latter
days - seems to sometimes just become a game. I think the really nice
thing about B&S is that it's *gender* too, e.g. "You know the world was
meant for men, not us". One of my favourite lines.
o Why doesn't the list administrator like the band fronted by Mark Knopfler
someone asked? Hmm I'll leave the answer to that one to the FAQ...
o clv: yes, they are.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that running this mailing list is still a joy.
So thanks to all of you for your continued support and enthusiam. Getting
back from a wonderful holiday with only a bottle of extra strong Calvados
from a farm and a broken Peugeot to show for it, the only thing that could
save the sombre mood was reading through two weeks' worth of messages and
once again tasting the weight of feeling for this wonderful music. That and
the fact that they're repeating The Sweeney on Channel 5. "Get yuh clothes
on love, you're nicked" as my girlfriend would say.

I don't trust bootleggers. The last time I bought one it was Neil Young
and Booker T and the MGs. Not only was the sound quality terrible, but
they didn't do "Green Onions" or that one from Test Match Special
either. A proper rip off. It came from Italy.
Someone mentioned demand and supply. By holding onto the Tigermilk tapes
for a bit longer, the band will probably benefit from increased exposure
and therefore increased demand. Business is business. Besides which,
it's a good laugh. If the band were real scumbags, they could release it
in a limited edition format at a ludicrously high price, like Ladies and
Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space in a special pill poppers packet.
By the way, the other day a boy called Valeri wrote in asking about
Tigermilk and it turns out that I was the only one who answered.
(Perhaps he says that to all the girls!) My tape copy of TM sounds like
shit, so if anyone would be kind enough to send him a copy he'd be very
happy. He seems like a nice boy, even if he has got a girl's name. if
you've tossed his letter down the cyber-toilet, you can find it at the
endlessly gratifying archive.(Click below)
01 811 8055 - if you recognise that number, don't go to the classic
children's TV site, accessible from one of the B&S tribute sites (I've
been surfing for the first time since we got the first phone bill). It's
like an irresistible vortex of nostalgia from which there is no escape.
Would someone in London like to ring that number and see if anyone
answers? No, thought not.
Shut up.

So I got a dub of Tigermilk yesterday (Thanks Pam! Now I need to find a
suitable gift in return..) and it's really wonderful. I really like the
pop-iness of it all, and it's range of styles is a bit tyongue-in-cheek,
methinks.
The most incredible thing about it, though, is how much the band has
matured in just a year or so. Sinister is so much fuller in terms of
songwriting...but I digress. It's so cool to see all
these overt influences on the first album...holy Velvets!
It also seems that the band took several songs from Tigermilk and reworked
them into new tracks for Sinister. I heard at least 3 or 4 riffs which they
have used again. Thoughts?
Your ramblingly,
Alex

As of last week "Sinister" (the album, not the list) is in at least two
extremely crappy record shops in San Sebastian. I even sneakily snuck it
into one of those display rack thingies. The cover stands out quite
nicely.

To answer your question, it's not very easy to get B&S records : i

I heared about B&S in FNAC, a big store with books and records and ...

I wouldn't call Spiritualized "scumbags" because they indulge in costly
packaging. I mean, that's their bag, and it's not like you can't get the
album for normal price if you are not a obsessive collector. I think the
packaging ideas Jason comes up with are unique and interesting.

Rolling Stone on America OnLine had a standout review of Sinister, providing
a few sound samples. A few weeks later, after searching in recordstore after
recordstore, I finally found a copy. But it's terribly unfair that the new
e.p.'s haven't been released here in the U.S. They're not even in the import
shops. It's very frustrating to not be able to find your favorite music. I
thought about ordering them directly from Jeepster, but I'm not even sure
that's possible. I can't even find their address (not printed on the us
edition of Sinister). (sigh).

i found my copy of "lazy line painter jane" at wax n' facts in atlanta.
it was over in the cdsingle box thing they have. as for dog on wheels, i
got it through secret sounds. http://www.secretsounds.com
they shipped it pretty fast. it's probably where i'll order seconds of
light also. so if you're in the states and having trouble finding the
singles, go to secretsounds site.

I didn't mean to call them scumbags. I don't know why I said that. I
admit that it's a very intriguing package, I just think the music should
come before collectability, I suppose. As you say, it's their bag (nice
use of Austin Powers terminology! :-))
Maybe my singling out of Spiritualized comes from the fact that I can't
get their bloody album at all in Spain. Quite frustrating because I
really liked the last one.
So apologies to Jasonheads everywhere :-!

I do believe they were referring to the 12 cd box of the album which went for
the equivalent of $120. As for the Tigermilk bootlegging problem, all that
Jeepster needs to do is put on a demo or a live song or something and
everyone will go buy it again even if they already had a good CD copy.
That's my 2 cents. By the way, when does the Ink Poloroid contest end?
Today I learned that international money orders cost upwards of $7.50, so
I'm going to try my hand at winning a shirt before I plunk down over 25

Before a cyber-brawl breaks out, please let me explain myself...
I did not, nor would I ever, call Jason Scumbag a Spaceman. I like his
band, I liked his old band, I do a really good impersonation of Sonic
Boom. On the odd occasions that I pass through Rugby on the train I
always look for their old house on Railway Terrace. i don't know why I
picked on their inventive packaging to criticise. It might as well have
been the special gold edition of "The Piano" soundtrack. I only wanted
to make a typically dubious point about demand and supply. I don't
usually abuse people, I think this little misunderstanding was the
result of flying fingers annd brain on the blink.
Can I get off the naughty chair now?
Having said all that, I do favour traditional CD packaging, anything
else just messes up your CD shelf and gets all scuffed and knackered
anyway. The most ludicrous example I own, both musically and otherwise,
is the super gatefold edition of "Space Ritual" by Hawkwind, complete
with rubbish sci-fi stories and pictures of rude dancers.
Should I get back on the naughty chair for admitting that?

The wasp under the glass on the table is not dead; the barman in the

The kitchen window in the top left is where the nice smells, which make us

B&S tie in... let me think... oh yeah, another time I was explaining how

I have to agree with what seems to be shaping up as the majority opinion on
the "bootleg" issue. I have just heard a tape of Tigermilk and it is lovely
- -- I like the acoustic feel of some of the songs, and the simplicity I guess
I'd call it, compared to ... Sinister. However, dub quality is usually less
than wonderful, and it would be great to have a cleaner copy. I read the
first mailing about putting Tigermilk on CD not as a bootlegging venture, but
as a way to exchange copies (as is being done on tape) in a cleaner, more
listener-friendly format. In any event, if the band does not intend to
re-release the album then they would not be losing any money at all if people
are exchanging (or even selling) CD copies. I would hazard a guess that most
people who might purchase a "bootleg" copy would indeed buy any eventual
re-release as well. Especially if it had an added track, as is suggested
elsewhere. Look at all the people who buy both the vinyl and CD of releases
by bands they like -- do bands release on vinyl expecting that it is going to
other than a collectors item for most people? It's a marketing decision
because people will buy the vinyl AND the CD.
I would never buy a bootleg version of a regularly released album -- but
there are bootlegs I will buy if that is the only way to get the material. I
would much prefer that the artist get the money him/her self, but if the
artist has made the choice to pass on making that money... I don't feel
wonderful about it, but my curiousity usually gets the best of me.
Let's all just beg B&S to re-release Tigermilk and end this whole debate.

Subject: Re: Sinister: Matt H's thoughts on B&S
The problem with the bootleg argument seems solely set on one point,
"Are Belle and Sebastian intending to re-release Tigermilk?". Sadly the
only people that honestly know the answer are the band and they're not
letting on.
I think that this has more to do with the fact that they may not want
old material to clash with new material. Especially as their new
material is so good. It's hypocritical, but even though I desperately
want Tigermilk re-issued, I don't want to slow down the recording or
release schedule of new material. This would inevitably happen if
Tigermilk were released again.
And surely even in the states where Tigermilk was never released you'd
still like to see the first major release on a new label to be new
material, even in the form of the singles album plus additional tracks
like 'modern rock song'.
Ah, it's an impossible debate, we are all protective of them and we all
want Tigermilk re-issued, and there'll never be such thing as a quiet
re-issue of it.
What are we to do, eh?
David
(my opinions do NOT reflect or come from Jeepster, please don't mingle
them, the Jeepster opinion is from Mark Jones and my girlfriend's - and
we bicker enough already!)

maybe i'm just slow, but why would re-releasing Tigermilk slow down the
recording schedule (or release) of new material? They've already said the
new lp won't come out til next year, the new single is ready for release,
so how would oh, say re-releasing Tigermilk next month or two months from
now or whenever, slow down the process?

actually I for one would rather see Tigermilk be the first major release.
Singles comps with an extra track or two are a pain if you've impatiently
already shelled out for the import singles - you just have to buy it all
over again (which of course, I will certainly be doing - hell, i've got
Tigermilk on vinyl but if it comes out on cd i'll be first in line to get
it just so i don't wear out the vinyl!)
but what do i know?
