I think that is a story like probably in 30's or 40's and it goes like
this,

There was a family of four - dad, mum, boy & dog in a quite poor village
in Spain. One day dad died so mum has to make all the earnings for the
family. She couldn't find the way to support family in this poor small
village but someone(I think it was a village mayor of the richest family
in the village or her relatives in France) brought her job in
France(Niece or Marselle, I guess) to be a maid.
Her boy & dog were left with dad's relatives. First 6 months or a year,
mum sent letters but suddenly mum stopped writing. Boy gets worried so
he decided to cross the border(Pyrenees) to look for his mum in France.
Naturally, he met a lot of good/bad people on the way....
This is the basic story line I can think of from a boy and a dog
crossing Pyrenees and a Odessey-type of story.
If I am wrong, just foreget it.
But the story I mentioned above is a quite famous story.
Even I am a Japanese, I know it!

Ta ta,
Kaori
