You can certainly "get away" with saying "It is me" in casual contexts.
In fact, in most situations it might even be impolite to insist upon "It
is I."  All the same, the credited response, e.g., in a SAT test or
something of that nature, remains "It is I."  Whatever form of the
expression you actually USE, you're expected to know the difference!!
