Righteous indignation the likes of which we haven't been able to enjoy since
the snakey fella went off to hand in his coursework!
I think the Lovin' Spoonful are right up there with the Monkees. They are
named after you-know-what like you-know-who. In "Do You Believe in Magic?"
they mention something called "jug band music", an image that haunts my
dreams and disturbs my every waking hour. "...his melody lines curled up and
purred like so many drowsy cats." I don't think they're as good as all that,
but are probably worth investigating, especially seeing as you can buy dirt
cheap CDs all over the place. "Summer in the City" was covered recently by
Joe Cocker in a pleasant lilting reggae style. There is also a version by my
hero, Isaac Hayes. I remember two good songs, "Didn't Want to Have to Do It"
and "Darling Be Home Soon". I haven't got them anymore, and I'm not
particularly bothered. But they are good. Nik Cohn says they are better than
the Byrds, but he's talking out of his arse.
I must say I am enjoying this new Top Trumps craze. I'm not very familiar
with those helicopters, but I'm more than willing to join in any other
discussions. My favourite helicopters were those great big Russian troop
transporters. As I recall they weren't very agile, but that double set of
rotor blades made up for it.
I am now going to lie down in a darkened room and think about jug band
music. He should have changed the lyrics round - "it's like trying to tell a
stranger about jug band music".
Popology Pete, the voice of reason.
