She's a chilean writer, forced to live in California after the 1973 golpe.
I remember "The House of the spirits" as a very good novel, a family saga
reflecting Chilean history and with some points reminding me of Garcia
Marquez.
BTW, Salvador Allende was the president of Chile, democratically elected and
killed during the Pinochet's golpe, obviously supported by the USA.
Allende was a socialist and that was enough.
Thousands of people were imprisoned, tortured and killed, other forced to
exile.
I know, thanks to a British friend, that the first page of the "Daily
Telegraph" had banner headlines praising gen.Pinochet for his job.
We'd better go back to our BandS.
Bye, Giuseppe
