Sinister: Silence is golden

Apart from dreaming about listees this weekend and an unfortunate
incident whereby I was singing Pulp's Common People but actualy saying
"I want to sleep with Village People" (I suddenly realised what an
apocalyptic image that was and promptly stopped) I had a bit of a
thought about the Great Debate over professionalism etc after the
Manchester gigs.

Basically it struck me that I don't really mind all the gaps between
songs etc. That's the way the band works and they need to swap
instruments and change positions and all that. It's just that this tends
to happen in unrelenting silence. Typically they will finish one of
their outstanding songs, there will be rapturous applause from the
adoring fans, calculated indifference from the music journalists and
then the long dark tea-time that is the GAP begins. I'm not saying Sarah
should smash her Stylophone and say "Godamn Cirencester - you rock!!!",
but "Donovan Lovedrake" style interludes or musings about B&S and where
they get their riffs from are so few and far between. Maybe "sticks"
Colbourn could come out and do an interpretive dance or perhaps some
conjuring, or "bleedin gums" Cooke could show us a trick with a hula
hoop. Maybe even there could be a bit of chat/general sharing of vibes.
They are such charming lovely people they shouldn't just let their music
do the talking.

Of course my problem is that I've always been acutely embarrased by
awkward silences. I was always volunteering for things I didn't want at
school, just to break that buttock-clenchingly awful silence. "Who wants
to be class rep....?" *PAUSE* "I will". "Who wants a detention?" *PAUSE*
"Oh alright, I'll have a detention..."

Anyway next time they tour, I'll be there - gaps or no gaps.
