Yes, or there's Nina Simone's incomparable 'Baltimore' , which with
its dreamy reggae beat would prove an ideal cover to further Belle and
Sebastian's fan-baiting eclecticism. Despite living 5000 miles away,
I like this campaign to make them play in Baltimore. Bewilder them
with its sheer arbitrariness. But we need some kind of focus for our
protest. Perhaps we should boycott the new album until they cave in?
Anyway, Tag was being unfair with all that
line-them-up-against-the-wall stuff. I think there's a certain amount
of insecurity doing the rounds about only liking guitar-based indie
music. Whereas to be exclusively into, for example, straight down the
line reggae, is seen as fine and cool. It's like in 'The Jerk' when
Steve Martin turns the cliche on its head by experiencing a spiritual
awakening on hearing some naff easy listening played on the radio
after growing up only hearing soul. Sorry, I seem to have turned this
into some kind of racial issue, which I'm sure is not what Tag meant.
I'll shut up.
I had a B&S nightmare last night. I dreamed I joined in a thread
about favourite books by opting for 'The Black Prince' bt Iris
Murdoch, and was flamed by a Cambridge student for making such an
appalling choice. It was quite distressing.
Umm.. does anyone know where Chris Geddes grew up? I was listening to
a tape of him on 'Beat Patrol' interview last night and realised that
he has a really odd accent - a sort of mix of Glasgow and London. Is
there a region of Scotland that was invaded by Walthamstow in the the
18th Century or something and still bears the scars? Or am I just a
clueless fuckwit?
