I'm not entirely happy with Joss' rejoinder, and would have preferred a
private email that didn't tend to make me look like an apologist for women
beaters in front of 500+ people who don't know me

It would appear that Turt's misinterpretation was based on my foul tongue.
The link to women beating seems extremely tenuous to me, and I would like
to stress that it was not what I intended. Frankly, I was rather impressed.
O well. Open mouth, insert both feet...

PS I know this is of minority interest, but if someone feels I have
offended them to the whole list, I feel it necessary to make matters clear.
